I currently have a Toshiba 62HM15A DLP. I am trying to sell it and will be looking to buy an LCD or Plasma or something flat. I bought this TV about 6 months ago and have loved it, but am finally tired of the big footprint. I am wanting to get like a 50-56" I think. I am not really sure how much of a price range to look at. I am not really sure how much I will get for my TV and that will decide how much I have to spend on the new TV. I am probably going to be looking around $1,000 to $1,300. Are there any good TVs for around that price? The TV will mostly be used for playing games on the xbox 360 or watching blu-rays on the PS3.

Or are there any good Plasmas for around that price that are Ok to use with game consoles and computers and not have screen burn in.

I found the following:

Sanyo 50" Plasma $898.00
Panasonic Viera 50" Plasma $989.99

I have a family member that works at walmart so I can get 10% off so it would bring it down to around $810 before tax.

Edit:

Ok I think I have decided on the Panasonic TC-P50X1, I have done some reading and it looks like its the best model for under $1,000. Amazon has it for $40 cheaper than bestbuy Here does bestbuy pricematch amazon?

Wow found someone to buy my current TV for $1,300. Never imagined I would have got that much, especially since I bought it used 6 months ago for $850. Haha craigslist is awesome. I found a 52" Sharp LCD 1080P for $1,000 from a store but its used. I am going to go look at it and see how it looks, not sure if I will go with that or the Panasonic.

Dang just looked up the store that has the 52" Sharp and its about an hour drive. I am going to call them today and see if I can get the model number for it and then I am going to go to Best Buy this evening to look at the Panasonic.

I have the 50" Panny 720p plasma and love it, although the price you listed is a bit high, but did a quick check and there isn't much better deals out there atm, although I payed 800 for that same tv from sears in November.

Costco has a 50" LG Plasma for 799 though, not as good as the panny though.

Yup. I bought a pair of Nike Shox about 5 years ago retial, used them for a week and sold them on ebay as USED for $10 more than I paid retail. God bless the internet.

Dang 🙁 the guy showed up and was confused. He thought LCD was DLP and so he didn't want it. But my cousin might be buying it and the surround sound for $1,100 on monday. What is a good 50"+ 1080p for around or under $1,500?

Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P50G10 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV for $1522 shipped from Amazon. That should be the best TV at this price point.

To get a bit of a sweeter deal, you might try some of the following recommendations from another deals forum:

for this particular product... Go to "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" and add the click on the link for "Panasonic DMP-BD60 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player, Black" Go down to: "Rate This Item to Improve Your Recommendations" select "I own this" and give it 5 stars. This will make the tv appear in your recommendations (just click "not interested" for everything else) and once the recommendations only contains the tv you can click on your gold box and it will show up there. Just make sure that you haven't clicked on the gold box today, if you have it's gonna take a day for it to show up or you could just create a new account.

Doing the above will supposedly drop the price about $75.

Do you have a preference between Plasma and LCD?

Depending on your room layout an LCD may not look as good(washed out with lighting on the screen) or a Plasma might glare a bit. Do you do any heavy gaming or use it with a PC? An LCD seems to be better suited for these usages. Do you plan to watch much SD content? Plasma shine over LCDs in that area.

All in all the panasonic that Kalrith linked is an excellent set and likely the best Plasma out right now. The only thing is for certain situations an LCD might be somewhat desirable. Some heavy gaming will leave a bit of IR on plasma sets, you can clear it but it's a minor annoyances to the hardcore. Also when hooking up a PC to it, the desktop can leave IR on the screen, again you can clear it but a minor annoyance.

Some people do claim that a Plasma can't get a true white, my eyes good but what is a "true white"? They do display better blacks. The real kicker for me was the glare, I couldn't use a Plasma because of where I placed the TV. Every plasma I've looked at had some amount of glare when you had a room that was well lit or a window with thesun shining through it just right. I do a lot of gaming too so I went with an LCD to avoid the IR. Some people claim that LCDs have blur but my PC monitor also does so it's something I've gotten used to and don't hold against the product.

So, to sum it up. Plasma gives a better picture overall with better SD content and no blur. LCD doesn't glare as much but doesn't have quite the same level of blacks as a Plasma and can seem washed out in a brightly lit room. LCD is better suited, generally speaking, for a gamer or someone planning to hook a PC up.

Idealy you'd want to examine each in person hopefully in a calibrated situation which is usually not possible. Most stores just hook it up and the picture is taken from a source that has been split multiple times and has a weaker signal than you'd have in your home. They are not adjusted for color. Over at AVS forums you might even find someone locally to you who would allow you to check out their set if you're thinking of making the purchase.

I don't really have a preference. The way I have my room setup right now is nice because it is in a corner with all the windows on the sides so it doesn't get a glare. The way I originally had it my DLP had tons of glares, this is the only way the room can be positioned without glare.

I do a ton of console gaming. Thats pretty much all the TV is going to be used for, console gaming, netflix, blu-ray, and a bit of youtube watching from a PC.

The G10 looks amazing! The only thing that really scares me is the IR. :/

I really wouldn't worry about it. Also, even if you do experience IR, it's temporary. Burn-in is what's not temporary, but it's also very rare. The most-important thing to prevent burn-in is to vary your content, which it seems that you will do. Also, make sure to have the pixel shifter turned on. If you're really concerned, then check out this avsforum thread and follow the instructions there. I ran the break-in DVD on my plasma for the first 200 hours with the settings turned up a bit (you could probably just have it in dynamic mode). It quickly and evenly ages the phosphors, and I've never experienced one bit of IR in the past 1 1/2 years, even after gaming for hours.

Like I mentioned before, it is a minor annoyance to the hardcore. Seeing a glimpse of something on screen that isn't really there can take away from the experience slightly but it's not something to really cry over.

I am bothered by it enough to go with an LCD for my room and gaming systems, but it's my preference.

Plasma is a better picture for movies.

I am considering buying This westinghouse 42" until I can afford a G10. I know its just a monitor, but thats really all I need because I rarely watch TV. Infact I only have an antenna, I also have a converter box with composite out so I could just hook that up if I need.
