give us more info on what your main uses will be (close-ups, scenery, people, outdoors, documentation, ect.) and how much you're planning on spending. Also, have you done much 35mm work before???

If you don't mind manual control for a first camera, then a Pentax K1000 would do the job. Or, a nicely crafted Olympus SLR.

There are many good use autofocus camera that can be had for cheap, or get yourself a Rebel if your heart is set with Canon. If you are a semi serious about photography, then a Elan would do nicely.

its actually a camera for my mom since she needs a new one. needs to be easy to use, auto focus, and takes good pictures. she has a ricoh and it has been repaired about 4 or 5 times. she mainly takes pictures of people but occasionally scenery

If your mom don't mind a large camera, then the Rebel will do nicely. Other wise a Olympus Stylus is the perfect little camera.
