Lite-on drives are well known for ripping music well. I can't guarantee you that their DVD-ROM drive is the same, but it is worth looking into.

How come slot-loading drives never really caught on? they seem a lot more convenient.

Your only bet on replacing the Pioneer slot loading with another slot loading is to get the fastest Pioneer out now, the 16x Pioneer slot loading drive(cause it's the only slot loading drive that I know of). If you just want to get the best dvd drive for ripping audio, then go with the standard tray load Lite-on 16x drive. It rips audio and video pretty darn quick :D

I have a 16X Slot-Loading Pioneer DVD and it's good.

I know that AOpen makes a 16X Slot-Loading DVD-ROMs too based on Pinoneers technology. Looks almost the same on the outside but marking are different. Basically, it's a Pioneer, the same parts just a different name.
