On a WinME system that I'm building for my neighbor, I got it down to 27 seconds from the time I press the power button. The system is as follows:

AMD Duron 700
20.5GB Western Digital 7200RPM HD
Creative 52x CD-ROM Drive
nVidia Riva 128zx/8MB RAM (Yeah I know it's not the right kinda video card to pair with a Duron 700 but he's mostly using it for office apps so it's not like he needs Quake at 100fps at 1024x768x32)
Epox somethingorother KT133 Motherboard with onboar sound

It doesn't really have anything in its slots besides the one AGP card, so I guess that's a bit of an advantage, but still =).

So what's the fastest you've gotten a system to boot up from the time the on button is pushed? And also, when I say the time to bootup, I mean until the mouse pointer icon is a pointer without an hourglass, no HD activity either.

i've gotten win2k around 30 seconds, but i'm cheating. that's from hibernation mode. otherwise it'd be a min or 2. but then again...why reboot?

i was at around 30-40 seconds with winME, with win2k i guess more or less a minute

athlon 850
asus k7m-rm
hp 9110i cd-rw
acer 40x cd
sb live! mp3
matrox g400
128 mb ram

I know my old mx300 used to take up around 5-8 seconds on startup...
I'm on a network so i guess that takes a while too.

I have WinME, 384MB of RAM and RAID-0. Windows loads so fast I don't even count anymore. The thing that takes the longest is the BIOS screen for my RAID card.

I know under Win2k it's longer, my system takes 3 minutes =( It gets stuck in the middle of the for a while. Oh well, like someone said, I don't reboot it much =). And what's even worse is this other system is a lot faster than mine (PII-450). Soooo hard to give away a system faster than your own =). Oh well.

Tell me about it, GopherMobile, installed my brother's Duron 800 some weeks ago, I hate my Celery300 even more now than I did before ;)
Win200 takes some minutes to load, and it also crashes during every other boot. Oh well, it's worth that.

wow my win98se scores wipes the floor with your win2k scores. I boot up to win98se in 17 seconds. Win2k must be a real slow loader.

I wonder how long it would take a U160 10K SCSI drive to load up W2K?? Heard before that it loads real fast but forgot the figure. One reason why I wanted to get a SCSI drive.

"wow my win98se scores wipes the floor with your win2k scores. "

yeah...but try and go without a reboot for at least a week. =P those times added up where win9x machines boot up are more than the couple of minutes it takes for an NT based machine to boot up once. the biggest culprit though is my scsi devices, they take like 30 seconds to initialize, than win2k rescans them at the splash screen. but i just use hibernate. less than 30 seconds.

Well, my ME system boots in about 21 seconds, and my 2k server boots in about a minute. Funny, my ME box is a P166 w/MMX and 64MB of ram :p

WindowsMe, about 30 seconds into my Network login window, and another 20 or so into my user interface.

I have nothing against Win2k and i know it's supposed to take longer to load because it has far more features than win98se. But i am a gamer and the only true gaming os is Win98SE. Win2k has too many comp. probs and it is not as fast.
