My friend is looking to make a 3 year lease on a 2009 Civic LX. He is located in Oxnard, CA if that helps.

He's been talking about putting $3000 down and pay about $170 a month for the car. I think it's too high, I believe with that downpayment, he should only expect to pay $150 a month.

Also, how do you negotiate the residual value of the car? Assuming he has the intention of buying after the lease.

If you intend to buy after the lease, be sure to check your state sales tax laws. You can really get screwed by double paying sales tax.

In IL you pay sales tax up front on the FULL cost of the car and if you buy out at the end they ding you AGAIN on buyout price. You've basically paid 1.75x for the car.

Lame.

If you intend to buy, just get the special APR's Honda offers and just finance the thing outright.
