Whats a decent switch?

It depends on what kind of performance you are looking for, price you want to pay, warranty length, and noise levels.

For 10/100 I've always liked netgears FS series of switches. They are the deep blue ones in the metal chassis with no fans, and a 5 year warranty (2 year on power brick). The UFO looking silver plastic ones have a much shorter warranty.

If you want gigabit I'd say get the SMC gig switches as they support jumbo frames but they certainly look like they have an internal fan. My Linksys gigabit switch has a noisy fan in it but the price was right. 🙂

Typically a home network will run fine with almost any cheap 10/100 switch. For the most part it's price and brand preference if any.

Personally, I think all those Soho switches are the same. They range from $8 =< $60. Unless you plan to get a manage switch, stick with something cheap. I have a linksys 8 port switch that I pay $30 for about 2 years ago still works, I just added a $8 5 port switch and it works the same.
