The Thin Red Line. I don't know if I'd call it depressing, but by the end I felt like shooting myself, or the director.

How about seriously violent? (But not too gory)

seriously violent, I'd go for Hard Boiled. It's a Hong Kong action flick so it's best subtitled, but there's a 40 minute long gun fight scene at the end that just rocks.

This is exactly right. But for more depression watch John Woo's other film, The Killer.

ooh, the professional, that's a good one I didn't think of, hey with the ending to The Professional, she can get violent and extremely depressing at the same time.

Agreed, and somewhat distrubing. Maybe too heavy if you had a bad day, you really have to be in the mood to have your heart ripped out and served to you on a plate for this one.
