what's a coppershim?

recently ordered a xp1700, comes w/ a 60 mil fan and coppershim(and i'm assuming heatsink) what and where is and does the shim go? i would assume the shim helps w/ cooling and goes between the h/s and cpu. or does it go between the h/s and fan? i'll be in a rather high ambient temp location, should i go get some arctic silver or another heat transsfer helper? lmk, jer

a copper shim is an aluminum shim made out of copper...

its not a freakin' heatsink! all it does is help prevent your heavy heatsink from crushing your new athlon. it does not cool or help in cooling at all. yes your cpu does need a HSF

1) you must have some sort of thermal compound between the Heatsink and CPU core.

2) the shim is not necessary, but should fit on the CPU between the Heatsink and CPU. it should NOT obstruct contact between CPU and HSF or u'll have a fried athlon in seconds

umm, i must have worded it incorrectly. an aluminum shim made out of copper? two different metals. i'm aware that's not the h/s. just wanted to know if it went between the h/s and cpu that question has been answered. thanx, Xfreebie. any other input would be appreciated. jer
