I would like to network the PC upstairs to the main computer downstairs, but going thru walls with cables is not an option - it has to be wireless. Whats the most cost effective wireless solution?

LAN and net access if you have cable/dsl:
Any cable/DSL wireless router box, cost is $20-100 depending on the model, Hot Deals has listed several in the $25-50 range.

If you're still on dial-up, either
(a) look for one that has a modem / serial port
(b) get a wired one that has a modem port, plus get a wireless "accesss point" (AP) and plug it into one of the wired ports
(c) use the wireless one as just a hub (not router) and set up Internet Connection Sharing on the downstairs PC.

Provided you have broadband...the most cost effective is a 802.11b wireless router that have some wired ethernet ports as well.
ON THE OTHER HAND, if you are worried about going through walls I suggest a 802.11g as in "Gee" wireless router. You'll pay a little more.

Try Linksys for instance.

Computers close to your router can connect with patch cables.
Remotes, depending on location can connect with PCI adapters or USB adapters (notebooks with PCMCIA).
USB adapters give you better antenna location flexibility.

I mentioned broadband because dial-up wouldn't work. If you just want to connect two or more computers together a wireless router may work even without a wan connection. I have not done this with wireless though and my expertise is really in Cisco commercial stuff.

Yes, any cheap wifi router should also act as a "wireless hub" even without a modem attached to it. So router + wifi cards (or USB wifi "cards") and you're set.
