What's a cheap replacement for an 8800gt?

I think my video card is dying, today I noticed artifacts on the screen and the video completely died. So I'm curious what's the cheapest card I can get that's on par (or slightly better) with an 8800gt.

I would be looking at a GTX 460 of some sort or a radeon 5750 or 5770. They're all quite a bit faster but honestly, you're dipping into that territory in which saving a few bucks drastically reduces your performance. Deals pop up for these cards from time to time if you don't mind doing rebates. If you want a LOT more performance, there are 5850's floating around for ~~ 140$. GTS 250 would be a fair bit faster too but you rarely see those pop up anymore. same for 4850, 4870. So yes, a 460 or a 5750/5770 can be found for under 100. Try for a 460 if you can, it's better than the 5750/5770.

If you're willing to accept a bit less performance, you might find that a GT240, radeon 4670, 5650, might do. if you look, might find one of these in the ~~ 60$ range. You'll probably notice a performance drop, but it won't be like it's getting cut in half.

If you want to buy used just look on AT FSFT. Good deals on used cards everywhere!

Also, you might want to chance baking your card :p

I'm not working right now so my budget is pretty low. Under 50.00 is what I'm working with at the moment. However I keep hearing people suggest baking the 8800s so that might be my best option.

If you want under 50 you need to either buy used or accept that you will have lower performance.

5 bucks for shipping... I don't know what's up with the reviews. the latest reviews look good but it looks like some people have had trouble with the card. I guess it depends on how you feel about XFX.

Also note that the card is DDR3 and not GDDR5.

you are not getting better for $50 not going to happen. Save up some more cash or settle for lower performance. For a slight increase look to 5770/GTX460 range. For cheap grab the GT240 mentioned above but its not a improvement.

did you mean gts450? a gtx460 is twice as fast as the 8800gt.

A 9600GT would be a bit slower, a GTS 250 just a bit faster than that (all are based on the 8800). A GT 240 will generally be about equivalent to a 9600GT. A Radeon HD 5750 will typically be faster, but not always by a lot. Same for the Radeon HD 4850.

a 9800gt is the same thing as the 8800gt so it does not perform better.

Smaller process used in manufacturing puts out less heat so a lot of them are clocked higher... therefore slight speed improvement. Like 5% at best though.

I would say used is definitely the best way to go at such a low budget, provided your baking doesn't work.

You can also find a 8800gts 512mb used for about 50$. They are a little faster than a 8800gt. mabe 10/15%.

well its official speeds are the same as the 8800gt. and really many newer 9800gt cards are the green edition which are clocked lower. plus a used 9800gt can be 65nm just like the 8800gt since it did not switch to 55nm until later.
