I got invited to a baby shower... my friend's wife is expecting a baby girl... but I'm not sure what happens at one of these things?
What kind of gifts do people get?

Would greatly appreciate any help (esp. from the ladies)..

TIA!

baby showers are a relatively new phenomenon.... a big improvement over the old days, when the mother had to lick Junior clean ;)

eh.. a guy going to a baby shower? *shudder*.

In my experience it's a party where a lot of wimmin get together and play really stupid games and give presents to the expecting mother. :) Also a lot of bitching about men is done in these, as far as I can tell.

g'luck!

They are a bizzare weather phenomenom where small infants and newborns fall from the sky like hail. They can be quite damaging to property and in a few cases have caused serious harm and even death to humans and livestock. If you hear a warning on the tv or radio please find shelter immediately and do not come out until you are told it is safe.

you'll usually get either money for the baby stuffs, or things that will be extremely helpful when taking care of a newborn. I hear it's VERY expensive.

<<What kind of gifts do people get?>>

Most people get gifts revolving around babies, things like bottles, blankets, clothes, bibs, diapers, toys, etc.

Well, they might be the modern types who like to invite couples.... there may be other guys there, so find out.

Usually mothers-to-be register at a store so that you will know everything they want and/or need. Sometimes the items are pricey (Strollers are about $100 these days) so it helps to go in on a gift with other guests.

Gift certificates to places like Target and Babys R Us are also appreciated. Of course, your girlfriend might just want to go shopping and buy a cute outfit/toys for the baby.

One note: I have always appreciated it when people give gifts for ME! One of my best friends gave me a bunch of stuff to pamper myself with an just a little squeaky bunny for the baby last time around. :) Gotta love that! :D

Heh. My sister-in-law had TRIPLETTS and we bought her the 3 seat in-line stroller. Thing cost $300.

Things are expensive these days so all the extra help is apprecitated.

Usually they just have a baby shower for the first child. The other kids get screwed. ;)

But every child has a "christening" which in my extended family is a big event with a party and gifts (usually cash).

yeah, some nice bath stuffs to ease the extreme pain of childbirth would probably be much appreciated as well. Just wait until your GF/Wife/etc. gets pregnant.. Just HEARING about this stuff makes me cringe, and mad/sad/scared at the same time! Things like knifes and scissors and other such objects that should never be "down there" ever.

My first will be born in about a week at most (fiancee is currently in "active" labor as I speak.. she's not the most fun person to be around right now. :p Although this has lasted for a few days and we keep getting sent back from the hospital. To the mothers in here, she's at a 4 right now.), so I've been through all the shower stuff allready.

The baby stuff is appreciated just as much by the dad! Believe me! This stuff is expensive as hell nowadays.

I've seen both unisex and the more traditional womens-only parties. Ask one of her friends which it is.

oooh! i just went to one this weekend! the one i went to was integrated... the dad organized the baby shower... all the girls were saying "this is a girls only event..." but he was like "this is MY kid, so i say that men are allowed!" it was nice. it's a get together that revolves around the parents-to-be. its an excuse to gush about little babies, play games, eat lots of yummy food, and for the mom to get attention. by the way... don't forget to get the parents a little something... they like to get attention, too. ;)

I went to one for our daughter. I stayed long enough to grab some food, then my son and I took off. We got quite a bit of stuff.

On tip, don't buy pink or blue, get the gender nuetral colors.

For a male, "baby shower" is a euphemism for "alien abduction."

See synonym: marriage.
