What're your thoughts on a 600M vs T40 Thinkpad

My wife wants a laptop and I'm thinking of getting her a 600M laptop since the Thinkpad is kind of expensive. Would you pay the extra money for the Thinkpad or keep the 600M. My wife just needs something fast, mobile. Doesn't do much cept spreadsheets, word processing, and net surfing.

TIA

THe wholel Dell VS IBM arguement is more of a service/support, quality, and durability arguement rather than cost. The IBM "Think Express" models tend to be more price competitive with DELL, then SKU'd not labelled "Thnk Express".

On the whole, I've found IBM quality, and durability to be far higher than that of the Dells.... I don't care how many times Dell runs the commercial of them abusing their notebooks.... all Vendors do that.

IBM uses more Titanium/Magnesium Composite in their TP's than Dell in theirs... They also have the Active protection system, which I feel saved my data's ass about four weeks ago. I've also been running their Rescue and Recovery with RRPC.... and It's cool as anything I've seen from any major vendor, and Dell doesn't have it.

Yeah, I'm a big IBM fan, but that's due to having learned the lessons from the Dells I deal with in my environment.

Thanks Dan. I have a Thinkpad right now and wouldn't give it up for nothing. I think this is by far the best of the notebooks I've ever owned (toshiba, compaq, sony, dell and hp)

What thinkpad do you have???? Depending on how old and what the drive size is you can go out and download IBM Rescue and Recovery/RRPC and run it on your's as well.

IBM's advantages are (1) superior service & support - fast repair turnaround times, good telephone service (2) Better quality - excellent keyboards (3) Nifty features - Active Protection System for HDD, Access Connections software for managing wireless profiles, etc.

Dell's advantages (1) Low price (2) Great LCD panels for graphics

I'd get the IBM for business use. The Dell 600m's keyboard and touchpad are complete crap, and the machine as a whole feels cheap.

You might also want to consider other notebooks like the HP Compaq nc6000, Fujitsu S6000 series, or Toshiba Tecra M2. These are business notebooks in the 5 lbs. range.

You are good to go then... Plenty of HD space and newer TP. IBM suports RR and RRPC (officially) back to the T22 era machines.

I got to fool with a 600m yesterday cause a buddy of mine got one. It feels like a big cheap piece of plastic.

The first problem though is taht you're comparing IBM's high end series with the Dell Consumer line. Check out the Latitudes and the gap closes significantly.

uhm... No... there is still a significant gap. 😛

D600. It's technically the same as the M600. It's built much more solid although it still loses out to the T series. Price it out for yourself and see if it's worth the price difference. Also consider that there have been some fantastic T41 deals for ~$1500 so all that said, I'd prolly still go with a T series for your wife.
