Probably compitition. As for regular Jello I guess there are other brands offer similar stuff for lower prices, plus it has to compete with newer stuff like yogart etc. Most people would rather buy a container already made of something rather than have to make it and wait for it to congel. So I guess convience also was a factor even though there are the little packs of the stuff, but really they are kind of expensive and you don't get that much of it.
