Whatever happened to this tech?

Fiber Optic CPU

Im curious to know if theres been any improvement on this type of tech. It seems like it would be ideal.

It isn't intended to be CPU like the current cpu, but a communications type cpu. Handling traffic on backbones, etc. There are already several companies that have the cpu like in the article.
