Whatever happened to side-scrolling beat-um-ups?

I've noticed that one of my favorite game categories has gone nearly extinct. I'm talking about games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time for SNES or DieHard arcade or BattleToads & Double Dragon.

These were the games were you walked left to right, occasionally jumping over obstacles but mainly tapping the attack buttons quickly to destroy throngs of enemies.

Are there any of these games still coming out? I'm tired of seeing only sports games racing games first person shooters strategy games. Help!

Yeah, but it'd be great to have new and improved graphical masterpieces that harness all of the graphics power of the XBOX or modern PC's to render photo-realistic models that scroll sideways in a two dimensional world and punch stuff.

Viewtiful Joe comes to mind.

Exactly what I was thinking when I entered this thread.

Ninja Gaiden for Xbox is pretty good too, not nearly as much of a side scroller, but still a good beat em up.

There's a new Metal Slug that just came out for xbox. Just like the old arcade one... wish I had an xbox :frown:
