Whatever happened to Manhunt?

Just picture Manhunt 3 with full DX 11 options and high res textures. It would be unspeakably epic. Even Manhunt 2 uncut on PC was pretty good sans the graphics:

Surely Rockstar has the balls to make it? With all they made from GTA V it surely can't be about budget. *Sigh* I want games that are different and not cookie cutter shooters or generic RPGs.

IIRC, Manhunt was a somewhat interesting, but mostly mediocre stealth game. Didn't play much of the sequel, but as far as I know, it was even more meh than the first.

The reason Rockstar hasn't bothered returning to the series is probably because they just don't see a lot of money in it. Although, I will admit, if they did announce Manhunt 3 then I would probably pay close attention to it, just to see what direction they're taking it in. I agree that with modern hardware they could do some pretty cool-looking, gruesome stuff (graphics have changed a lot since two console-generations ago) but it's gonna take more than just pretty graphics to get me to buy a new Manhunt game. So yeah, who knows. Maybe they'll surprise us. But I doubt it.

Looking at the sales on VG chartz. 1.28m (PS2)+.19m (Xbox) for Manhunt1; .56m (PS2)+.53m (Wii)+.3m (PSP) for Manhunt2. All that OMG AO rated game press didn't help.
I got bored of Manhunt 1 after I saw all the kill animations a few times; didn't bother with the 2nd.

I'd rather play something like Fallout with a murder mod. Or Elder Scrolls.

But a shallow game with good killing is ultimately un-fulfilling.

I feel like GTA5 has some Manhunt influence. There were certain camera angles on some of the missions that immediately made me think of Manhunt.

Speak for yourself. Some of the most critically-acclaimed PC games ever made were popular for their satisfying, unadulterated violence; not for their story (see: Doom, Quake).

Manhunt of course isn't a fast-paced FPS monster-shoot like those games, but you get the idea. It is certainly possible to make a fulfilling game focused on combat and combat alone.

It was more the atmosphere and gameplay not so much the mechanics. Games are cookie cutter these days. Same thing for say The Suffering.
