i believe al gore vetoed that project because he didn't want his invention to have a sequel, something about damaging the integrity of the original.

It's still happening, it just takes time. Last I heard there were still less than 10 schools on it.

I know RIT has it. A friend of mine goes there. But I don't think all students have access to it.

What exactly is it? Can someone just lay down an OC3 and call it 'Internet2'? I'm confused. I'm a University student and we're on a T1.

I've been wondering about this as well...

There still working on it. Its partially for educational purposes, partially to try out new tech. I believe it uses IPv6.

It's in service now, but limited to educational institutions and big business.

Our national network Ca*Net3 just joined up as part of the international Internet2 network. It has multiple OC-192 streams (~40 GBps), making it the fastest national network in the world.

Our government announced last week that Ca*Net4 is in the works, and donated $110,000,000 towards building it. This network will be 8 times as fast as the old one, with total throughput of around 320GBps.

More info on Ca*Net3 can be found here.

A cool live-updated network traffic page can be found here.

Well, I know it's hooked up between UCLA and Cornell (here). It was weird, earier this morning, there was a system glitch at Cornell and I couldn't connect to the internet, but I fired up UT, thinking it might just be my browser. Well, a clanmate of mine has a server set up at UCLA where he's a network admin, and it was the only server that I could connect to. It was pretty cool. :) Plus, I always get a sub-100 ping to that server.

More and more schools are getting on it, we (Cal Poly, SLO) just got it a couple of months ago but limited to specific departments I think. And I'm pretty sure some of the other CSUs and UCs already have em.
