When the Dreamcast came out, I drove my girlfriend crazy with it.. I kept saying that I wanted one, everytime it came on the TV I would watch it... then she bought me one a month or two later... I still have it for that reason...

Still got mine. Bought it at launch. One of the best consoles I've ever owned. And it's very versatile. Emulation, Divx, Linux, homebrew games. Very cool little console.

I still have my dreamcast, though sold most of the accessories, including the broadband adapter. Great system, still holds its own in graphic quality especially compared to the PS2, which really isn't that much more technically advanced if you look at the specs. It's too bad Sega discontinued their hardware line, a dreamcast II would have been a worthy contender.

Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Metropolis Street Racer, all great games that were included in my Dreamcast I won on ebay. I paid $100 for the bundle, Dreamcast, two controllers, 3 VMU's. It was excellent. MSR was awesome, almost as good as GT3. And Shenmue kept wanting me to shout for more. It was an excellent console. Alas, I has to sell it to get something that wasn't so outdated. It was getting harder and harder to get games. I kept on having to rely on Egay for games and accessories. So I sold it for a mere $50 for everything I had to EBGames. Now I have a PS2. It's just as great as the Dreamcast but in my heart there is always a spot for that awesome little console. Seriously, Sega really really needs to make some DC to PS2 ports of some outrageously awesome games.

IMHO, Sega would rather see Sony go down the tubes. Would be nice payback for PS2 killing the DC.

Might also be why Sega has released so many games for Xbox and GC.

Not a bad deal. You probably could have gotten more for it on Ebay. EB offers lousy trade-ins. I was so enthralled by Shenmue that the day after I finished it, I ordered Shenmue II. At $60, it cost more than my DC cost, but I was hooked.

I finally got MSR for Xmas (still sells for $20 used!) and I'm hooked on that, too. It is so much fun (except my steering wheel broke! I haven't gotten around to replacing the potentiometer).

Honestly, I think I have enough DC titles that I haven't even touched yet, let alone ones I've started and not finished, that by the time I'm done playing DC, I'll be able to get Xbox, PS2 and GC for $60 each. It pays to not care about "cutting edge" :D

has succeeded mainly because microsoft has the financial muscle to get the hardware out, and to purchase the big titles. and they have the resources to go into a price war with Sony, if need be. Nintendo too, doesn't seem to have as deep pockets, and they've fallen to last place, imo.

What the hell are you talking about? Nintendo doesn't have deep pockets? They have 98% of the handheld area owned, each GC sale actually makes them money as opposed to Sony and MS. The GBA sells great, as will the GBA-SP no doubt. Nintendo is doing well in just about all markets, killing the XBox in Japan and beating MS overall in 2002. Granted PS2 sales blew out the both but to say Nintendo has no money is just another one of those ridiculous falsities people like to spew about Nintendo because they heard it from their friend who says their XBOX OWNS THE GC.

Just a ridiculous comment; I was suprised no one jumped on it yet.

I still have my Dreamcast that I purchased on launch day (9/9/99  ), and still play it for Soul Calibur and other Dreamcast-exclusive titles.

It's really too bad that it didn't catch on more than it did... I think it was a well-designed piece of hardware. :)

That is a HUGE factor. Of the few people I know that own a DC, all were in on getting pirated games.

Dreamcast made the mistake of allowing you to use audio CD's. This compatability is what allowed hackers to formulate the copying of data from GDROMS and allowing you to burn it to CDR.

This is where I think Nintendo is smarter than the other latest consoles. PS2 and XBOX can both read DVD's, and lo and behold they're hacked.
I don't see now or in the near future where people will play pirated GC games.
Funny, I just realized I now own 17 GC games.

yup, nintendo rakes in that sweet profit, even though they have to use inferior formats to do it:p its a shame they didn't use a dvd capacity medium.

Dreamcast is great. It's pretty close to the current generation of consoles and it has some awesome games.

The main reason that Sega discontinued the project is because they weren't selling enough in the U.S. because of everyone's PS2/Xbox/Gamecube anticipations. When all 3 of your competitors are offering better systems, it's hard to compete, but the Dreamcast was by far the best system on the market from the first day it came out until the PS2 came out.

Actually the Dreamcast had superior memory handling for Video and textures compared to even the PS2 now. It can also handle AntiAliasing a bit better.

Same here, I actually HAVE to pirate games for my DC because nobody carried DC stuff here anymore, not that I mind anyway. I love not having to pay 70 bucks for a new game.

I have to pirate games because I don't understand how to use eBay, half.com, EBGames.com, or any other online used game outlet.

Also buying "used" games won't help Sega out much either....

Well, seeing as they yanked it from production 2 years ago now, buying new games is just a waste of money.

Here's what didn't happen to the Dreamcast:
Streets of Rage 4
Chakan II
Shining Force 3
Shinobi
Eternal Champions
And a whole slew of other franchises that helped make the Genesis great but weren't carried over the the DC.

Agreed. Foolish to give up established franchises with built-in fan bases, since that normally translates into at least "semi-automatic" sales.

Nintendo exploits franchises like there's no tomorrow. Seems like an effective strategy....

Did you get my last PM Tallgeese?
