After Nintendo 64, Dreamcast was very anticipated.... The commercials were constantly on TV. I know that sega gave up on it and just started to make video games only. But does anyone own a Dreamcast, is it more comparable to nintendo 64 or gamecube/ps2/xbox?

the DC is my favorite system (otehr than snes, nes in 3rd) it was great, but it wasnt too 'mainstream' popular (didnt know how to word that). it had great games though.

yeah, my thinking is that sega didn't have the resources (ie, loads of ca$h) to make the dreamcast succeed. Xbox has succeeded mainly because microsoft has the financial muscle to get the hardware out, and to purchase the big titles. and they have the resources to go into a price war with Sony, if need be. Nintendo too, doesn't seem to have as deep pockets, and they've fallen to last place, imo.

My roommates and I have a dreamcast, and we love it. The graphics are actually fairly good and there are some really fun games...such as virtual tennis (or maybe it's tennis 2k2). But the great things about it are that it's only about 50 bucks to buy and you can download and burn games. One drawback though is that the load time is sorta long. But overall i think it's a greatly underrated system

Stojakapimp, discussion about warez is illegal on these forums...can cause locked threads and vacations, beware.

I own a Dreamcast. I have to say that their sports games were second to none in their time.... They still are superior to PS2 and Xbox in design, but the Dreamcast is old hardware and can't compete with the graphics or speed or memory capacity of the newer systems.

The main reason that Sega discontinued the project is because they weren't selling enough in the U.S. because of everyone's PS2/Xbox/Gamecube anticipations. When all 3 of your competitors are offering better systems, it's hard to compete, but the Dreamcast was by far the best system on the market from the first day it came out until the PS2 came out.

I still own a Dreamcast. It has better graphics than N64, and comparable (but inferior to) GameCube/PS2/XBox.

It does, however, have the best console fighting game currently available: Soul Calibur.

sony's PS2 marketing killed it. never mind you couldn't walk into a store and buy a ps2 for another 1.5 years after DC came out, and you could count the number of good PS2 games on one hand 2 years after DC came out. damn sony.

now sony is trying to do it again by making up numbers for their next console.

I think Sony saw the future and decided against it. Why try to compete with the other consoles when they can expancd on other electronics.

I've played games from both DC and PS2.
Many of the earlier PS2 games looked crappier than DC games.
My DC has been collecting dust for awhile. Time to break it out for awhile later.

DC is an amazing system. It fell victim to bad timing, Sega's traditionally poor marketing, and the behemoth hype generated by XBox and PS2.

The Dreamcast was actually a bit of a success. But the life of an average console is 3-5 years until replacement. It was a short life, but consider the Genesis lasted 4 years before the Saturn came out, and the Sega Master System only did 3 itself.

Dreamcast was a sweet system and I enjoyed it thoroughly until I got my Gamecube. Dumped my Dreamcast in for sale/trade since it was neglected.

A revamped version of Skies of Arcadia is being released next week for Gamecube. EGM picked it as Game of the Month for January.

Skies of Arcadia was a fantastic epic RPG for Dreamcast. I'll probably wind up getting the new version even though it's all but a straight port with a few extra features.

my first online console gaming was on the dreamcast. 3 of my friends and I hooked up on our tv to play this other team of 4 on NFL 2k2. Man was that sweet.

That's pretty much what happend to it.

I still play my DC and I just got a coupla of "new" games for Xmas. It's good enough, and I'm busy enough, that I'm probably gonna keep playing my DC until the next gen of consoles come out.

It seems odd that Dreamcast had such a short lifespan. N64 has already been out, and the DC was teh only thing brand new on the market. Plus the marketing strategy was pretty good... they had a lot of commercials. I recall that they had all the characters from the games interact with each other, and then at the end they zoomed in on the Red light and whispered "Dreamcast." But I think that marketing campaign only lasted during the initial release of the Dreamcast. They should have continued to bombard consumers with marketing campaigns and promotions, like the current gaming console companies do.
