What would you upgrade?

What would you upgrade in the computer from my sig? I mainly play games, do some Photoshop and 3D modeling.

How much to spend? What resolution do you want to play at?

For the latest games the 6600GT is holding you back more than the 3000+. A 7900GS or GT would be a good first upgrade, then either an A64 3500+ - 3700+ or an X2 4200+.

in the order listed:

1. get total of 2GB of ram
2. upgrade videocard to at least x1900xt or 7900gt
3. plop in an x2 processor
4. get a seagate 7200.10 500GB for additional storage

mm.. so much to upgrade

i wouldnt think that you oc because Kingston ram isn't a great ocer (at least that's what people say)

If you wanna stick to your 939 setup, upgrade:

-to a 3700 chip (single core for under 100) or X2 4400/Opteron 165 (up to you on the ocing part) (Opty-$160, X2 4400-2$40ish)
-2GB of ram
-better Vid card (depends on how much you want to spend, 7900GTs can be had for around 220 dollars, great GPU)

basically what PhoenixOrion said. the ram will help you with your editing and games.. so will the vid card (duh).

new proc also will help.

I'd say dual core CPU, then 2GB of RAM, then finally video card. That's what I'm planning to do. I'm going to get an X2 pretty soon, then a DX10 video card next summer when I actually have time to play games.

Ram - 2 GB Total
Video Card - 7900 GTO
X2 Processor (3800+)

IMO upgrading from a 3000+ to a single core 3700+/3800+/4000+ is a waste of money.

Ram will benefit everything
X2 will help with photoshop a good amount, plus any multitasking is a +. Depending on what you 3D model in, it might help TONS with rendering.
Videocard = immediate game improvements, 3D modeling help.

Get an X2 before there're gone. I just picked up a 4800+ last week. They're still available and their prices are around $250.

RAM prices are outrageous. For what you could get this past January, you pay premium today. My OCZ gold is now priced 25% more now.
Maybe after Christmas, AFAIK RAM prices should be realistic. There're are some sellers who are starting to discount their RAM now, but more is needed.

There's some great deals on 22" LCDs at Costco, check them out next week. For those, who need an upgrade and everything else is too high.

Your CRT is good for resolutions up to 1600x1200 (any higher would lower the refresh rate too low). In order to run that high in recent games, you'll need a MUCH better graphics card. At that resolution (as well as some lower ones on other games), your 3000+ will perform the exact same as any X2 or 4000+ single-core.

Invest in an x1900xt or even the GX2 since you have such a good SLI mobo. Another GB of ram would be nice too, but, as others have pointed out, it is carrying a premium right now (a little over $100 for another 1GB stick of value ram).

So, it depends on how much you want to spend, but you could go with another GB of Kingston for $112 at ChiefValue, and match it with a 7900GTO from ChiefValue for $250-- total $360. And your system will be about 3-4x as fast as it is now, depending on the game and resolution you end up playing at. (GTO review here... it doesn't have your 6600 in there, but it has a 6800gt which is faster than yours for comparison)

2GB or RAM
then perhaps an opty or a 3800xt
graphic card. get a 7900GT
perhaps a bigger HDD? a 320GB can be had for under a $100.

If hes not going x2 he should drop the divider and o/c his 3000+. He should be able to get 2.2-2.4ghz on default voltage with ease with that chip. A newer video card is def the way to go first then if your not gonna o/c a x2 then 2gb of memory.
