What would you upgrade?

I only have $400-500 to upgrade. I no longer have the 6600GT in my sig but my first upgrade will be either a new or used 6800GS/GT. Now for my second upgrade. I can either go with 2gb of memory and keep my KDS 19" CRT(which isn't to bad) or keep my memory and go with a 19" LCD(<$300).

I can sell the 1gb of memory or the KDS for about $70-$80(to my bro). This will be a gaming PC and I like to run them at 1280x1024 with most all settings up if it's playable.

In the end I will choose for myself I am curious as to what you all would go with.

what resolution do you like to run your desktop at? i ran my 19" at 1600x1200, so i'm curious. when i switched to a 2005fpw i found myself missing the extra vertical resolution. i guess what i'm saying is that if you're running at higher than 1280x1024 you might miss all that space when switching to an LCD.

I am running 1024x768 desktop since I don't have the best eye sight. I might consider going 1280x1024 but that just depends. Curious on the 6800GS how is it, it's about or is as fast as a 6800GT but the GS only having 12 pipelines? The 6800GT has 16 right? Does that not matter much?

BTW I think I might buy a monitor used if I go with that because I wouldn't want to get one with a few dead pixels and I think most manufactures will only RMA if you have like 8 or more. I think if I buy used I might be better off. Whats a good 2x 1gb value brand nowdays?

If you're thinking used monitor, have you considered getting another CRT? You can get what used to be a top of the line 21"-22" CRT for about $200 to $250 shipped now.

I don't want to bother with another CRT when I upgrade. If a 21" wasn't so bulky I would but this 19" is huge as it is.

Got to thinking I might consider another 19"-21" CRT . But would going from this cheaper KDS to another 19" have alot better quality screen? Could someone recommend 3-5 good 19"-21" CRT's from Azatek or another site? Will anything with a Trinitron tube in it be alot better?

Don't get the 6800GS.. step up and get the GT.

And go for the 19" LCD. CRT's are old technology... there are better ways to heat a room. ;)

I like my NEC CRT a lot. It looks a lot better than the vast majority of the CRTs I've seen. There's a 22" version of the 19" I have now that would be the monitor I would get if my own died.

If you can squeeze something like that in, a 6800gs, and 2 gigs of value ram that would be a nice upgrade.

Why are you selling your current ram?

Ain't the GS/GT on about the same performance level?

yeah it's 2x512mb and I wanna get 2x1gb if I indeed upgrade to 2gb. So I won't have any use for the 2x512mb. Really though does going from 1gb to 2gb help alot with games? If not I can wait 6-8 months(or when UT2007 comes) to upgrade that.

YOyoYOhowsDAjello do you know of a good place with the 19"? Not sure I want to go 22" because of the size. I'd probably have to buy a whole new desk because I ain't sure this one I got would hold that beast.

For the second upgrade I'd trrade the 3000+ for a used 21" crt or maybe some RAM then buy a 3800x2($300).

I don't multitask much does dual cores really help much in games? All I do is surf the net, music, pics, movies and games. Sometimes I capture and burn from my DV camcorder.

I agree with the CRT -> LCD. If you are spending that much money on something, there is no reason why you should settle in for a CRT over an LCD monitor, unless you had a really good explanation.

 for the 6800gs. i'm not sure how much 4 less pipelines will affect it but looking at the benchmarks, it's like 98-99% as good as a GT.

i'd advise getting the 2nd gig of ram now (unless you plan on going to AMD's upcoming socket m) cause ram prices are pretty cheap right now. you could try selling your 19" crt and use the money made with your remaining money to get a decent 19" lcd

Azatek has some 19" monitors as well but the selection isn't as good.

For 1gig vs 2gigs, it depends on your games how much of a difference it will make. You could even get a 1gig stick initially and run 3 sticks for two gigs. If the difference is significant then get another and sell your 2x512. If you don't notice much of a change, sell either the 2x512 and wait to add another gig later or stick with the 2x512 and have your brother hold onto it until you want to move to 2x1gig and you can trade him your 2x512.

As for all this LCD vs CRT stuff, it's a personal preference. I'm not going to tell someone that one is right for everyone, but for gaming when you want good image quality, quick response time, good black levels, and resolution options, a CRT still seems like the best bet. Yeah, it's not as new as LCD technology, but that doesn't make it inferior.
