People at my work pitched in and bought extra body armor for one of our guys that went to Iraq. (We raised $1000 and the company, in a very rare fit of benevolence and generosity, matched our contribution).

He tearfully thanked us when he left. When he came back he thanked us again and proceeded to show us the parts of it that were destroyed by an IED. Saved his life (or at least his liver), and the army doesn't always provide the best stuff to each soldier.

Soldiers are allowed to use non-standard stuff?

That's awful! It just encourages the army to use substandard crap.

It's because the army uses sub-standard crap that people go buy their own stuff. Like smuggling their own .45s for actual stopping power, etc... Whether you think it's awful or not, he's alive, and it's because of the body armor we bought him.

No, no, I think it's great that you guys did that. It's just awful that individual soldiers have to resort to bringing their own stuff b/c of the inability of the army to take care of their own.

Though perhaps this has always been the case. Being Canadian we don't hear a lot about how you guys do things.

At the end of the school year before last I asked my students to bring in stuff for the local soldiers (11) in Iraq and they brought all kinds of stuff that were on the lists of things wanted at that time like the towelettes, individual size cans of fruits, snacks, books, music Cds, etc., but after we sent them and all the guys came back, thankfully, they said the thing that meant the most to them were the little notes I asked the kids to write to them saying that we were thinking about them.

Maybe you could look up some of his friends and get them to write notes or letters letting him know that they're thinking about him to include in your package.

If he doesn't already have any, some of those under armor (tm) undershirts and what not would go a long ways toward keeping you cool when wearing body armor and gear. They also don't cost that much.
