What would you say to this?

My father works at a college where amongst other thing, the faculty is given a yearly account of about $800 to spend on either things like research related trips, say to a conferences or something. However this money also adds up from one year to the next if not spent. Some people also spend this money on things like computers for their work. Now my father has said that he would be willing to help me out with my next computer upgrade by using this money, about $1200 or so. It's a Christmas present. He would of course say that the money would be spend on a computer upgrade for himself so the actual purchase would be OKed on a computer purchase, the only difference is who will be using the computer. What would you say to this?

And people wonder why property taxes go up and educational institutes are constantly claiming they don't have enough funding?

You father has no ethics and weak morals if he's willing to use money earmarked for educational purposes so you can get a better computer.

Someone should find out which college and send this to them.

Strings attached?

not honest at all.

Want to make it honest? use that equipment to provide a service to either him or the school that he would be completley unable to obtain any other way.

Example:

The Audigy 2 ZS in my computer came via a similar trek. A professor needed sound recording and stuff done for his curriculum and wanted it to be high quality, he bought the card, we put it in my computer, did what he needed done and since he didn't "need" the card anymore, he "considered it refuse" and I have it now. $100 being a small price to pay for a technical person like myself's undivided attention for a day

No.

They have appropriated that money to be spent on things that will directly benefit the school, by education of their staff, or improvements of their assets. Using it for anything else is wrong and probably illegal.

sure - its his money - he saved it up

why not.

No it's not.

I think your father should spend the money on its intended use - something that will help him in his teaching.

I don't really know what you thought would be accomplished by asking such an obviously unethical question. Maybe you like seeing your dad insulted?

Uhm i don't see anything wrong with this.

But ya can't beat the usual ATOT high horse riders.

Maybe I should take an ethics class.

You should, so should this guys father. The money isn't for the father to buy gifts, it's not a personal bonus, it's a grant to help him get/do what he needs for his WORK. How this can be something people don't understand is beyond me.
