between the two the XT of course. But I also think it would be pretty stupid to buy either at this point in time.

X1800XT.

Unless i heard wrong, the X1800s are being discontinued, so i imagine in a month or even a few weeks, we're going to see better prices on the X1800XT vs. 7800GTX 256 MB, & X1800XL vx. 7800GT.

As was mentioned though, if SLI is desired, then the 7800s may be a better bet, since Xfire master cards are impossible to find, & are overpriced.
That being said though, i have a feeling the 7800s may be discontinued soon too, which would render the SLI upgrade impossible...

We have no word from nVidia that 7800s are discontinued, and I doubt they will be. Even if they were, there are many thousands in circulation.

I don't follow the GPU news closely...what's the plan with the G71?

Just a single new flagship card, with all the older cards (7800GT, GTX, & GTX 512 MB being kept in production)?

If that's the case, I like that idea actually. Nicer than ATi's dump-all-the-3 month-cards-for-new-ones plan anyway...

Why? What's wrong with:

500mhz(?) 32 pipeline 7900GT instead of 20 pipe 7800GT?
650mhz(?) 32 pipeline 7900GTX instead of 24 pipe 7800GTX
500(?) 48 pixel shader X1900XL instead of X1800XL
625mhz 48 pixel shader X1900XT instead of X1800XT
650mhz 48 pixel shader X1900XTX instead of flashed X1800XT PE

As long as MSRP prices of $399, $499, $549 are retained, 7800 and X1800 could be discontinued. The major advantages of those cards still in production are lower prices on them. But I think having only 1 flagship G71 or 1-2 R580 cards isnt that great.

Oh don't get me wrong, having more selection is good.

But if ATi wants to be competitive in the Crossfire vs. SLI market, discontinuing the X1800s after a mere 3 months isn't such a smart way to promote that

since Xfire master cards are impossible to find, & are overpriced

They're the same price as the regular XT at Monarch, just no rebate $485 retail

Newegg has them instock again...but overpriced. If you want it, you can get it.

The problem is no one (end users) has Crossfire motherboards, and many, many people have SLI motherboards. (that are also much cheaper)

When you add to that the driver issues with games, the non dynamic SFR, the non geometry scaling tiling that is the default for the vast majority of D3d games, the fact that you can't edit or create profiles, the fact that you're stuck with defaults for non profiled, and that two X1800XTs are a noisey furnace of a rig, how many people are going to spend over $1000 for such a rig?

Apparently not many as I never run across Crossfire owners and all kinds of people have SLI.

I have a Crossfire motherboard, and I'm not alone. MSI RD480 Neo2 Crossfire is available <$100 at Newegg, some searching could probably find a better deal. Probably not a cheap as the cheapest SLI, due to a number of issues with time on the market a key one.

You're not alone.

However, I'm joined by over 1,000,000 SLI board owners. Do you think 1,000 Crossfire boards have been sold?

(so my point stands, Crossfire requires a mobo purchase for the VAST majority)

Your point is off-topic. The thread is "if money were no object: X1800XT or 7800GTX + why" get it?

No, he won't get it. He will try and make it a "SLI versus Crossfire" thread. He is about as thoughtful as a parrot... a Nvidia-sponsored parrot.

SLI and Xfire ARE part of things to consider when looking at these two cards. Therefore, it's right on topic. Actually, SLI and Xfire come to mind quicker than anything else, when somebody types "money is not an object", wouldn't you agree. If you don't agree, please state why, and your reasoning behind it rather than to flame. It would be refreshing.

It's not "off topic".

These days, multi GPU functionality is part of any high end video card decision.

What part of me voting for the X1800XT did you not understand? To say the X1800XT is a better single card solution unless multi gpu may be in your future does not exactly make me some sort malevolent forum con artist.

It only makes me a guy telling pretty straightforward truth.

BS, its your typical misrepresentation of the straitforward truth.

Wrong
(that are also much cheaper
Wrong...they are a little cheaper at the cheapest and much more expensive at the highest end.

*You try starting saying that the price spead between the cards is actually more...but you were wrong
*Then it was OEM...wrong, it was retail
*Then its the warranty....OK, but we know about the "real" warranties now, don't we?

Oh, I understand your postings alright;)

If cost is no object, I would get Quad SLI 512MB GTX's powering dual 30" displays.

As for me I prefer the GTX over the XT (or even the GTX512) because not only does it generally cost less but for around the same performance as the 512's you get a nice quiet and cool single slot card.

Yowza! I'd take that Asus Dual 7800GT over either of these choices, anyday!

X1800XT. Unless you play AOEIII, the x1800xt is much faster than the 7800GTX 256 with AA/AF turned up at high res (which is the intended purpose these cards anyhow) in newer games. It can also be had for ~$450 last I saw.

I like both ATI and nVidia products. I have used both and will continue to do so. Right now I lean more towards the nVidia card. Its been around a little longer and I feel more comfortable relying upon it and its performance than the ATI card. The ATI x1900 series could change my mind but thats not whats being debated here.
