What would you rather have money being of no object?

Title says it. If money were of no object,(the price difference between them now is around $10) and the system was exactly the same either way, which video card would you rather have, and why did you choose the one you did?

He has to keep things in perspective... you can't just buy the best, you have to have a card that is comparable to the rest.

I voted X1800 because it is marginally more red, and have some other cool features, not including 3d capabilities and stock cooling. I'd say that since the price is similar, as well as the performance, you might as well get the card thats more "cool".

Most people believe that the x1800 is much more expensive than the 7800 and they will say things like "I will get the 7800gtx to save cash" when now the price difference is much less.

They should pick between the two cards from a performance standpoint with no monetary influence at all.

Personally I'd take a 7800gtx and OC it. It's slightly cheaper too, but probably not worth choosing it over the x1800 just because of that. I also like the idea of 24 pipelines vs 16, because that could be the difference in performance when extremely shader intensive games come around. That's just speculation...the x1800, with its higher clock speeds, could make up for that difference. I dont know really.

They're both great cards and perform roughly the same. My vote goes for the 7800gtx for that $10 saving and more pipes.

If the price is the same, the X1800XT is the better choice, presuming you aren't in the "quiet pc" group.

(which I am not)

I don't think the price is the same as implied here though:

$492 lowest retail X1800XT at newegg

$454 lowest retail 7800GTX
(and I've seen that card as low as $420 in the last couple weeks AMIR)

A KEY factor here would be if you ever want to even have the possibility of multi card.

IIRC over a million people have bought SLI motherboards now. If you buy a GTX, put it on your SLI board, and decide you need more power you can add another GTX. You'd have to sell the X1800XT and buy two GTXs.

With FEAR and COD2 already putting the smack down on single cards, and games like UT2007 and Unreal 3 coming to do more of the same, I think the availability of multicard is more of an issue than it was in HL2 days.

If you throw having to buy/tolerate Crossfire equipment into the equation, my vote changes to 7800GTX, for additional flexibility of features and hardware.

OP: If money was no object, why not include the X1900XT with it's iminent release? It's going to be a "tad" more expensive, but if money is no object, why even consider the X1800XT? Also, the 7900 will be out about a month after the X1900XT is released, so why even consider a 7800GTX right now if money is not a factor?

Neither, wait on X1900XTX.

Will it be under $500? $589 to be exact.

Yep, I think so, there was a thread about the retail price and I think it was lower then $589. Double check me though :)

gtx for me. though the xt wins more benchmarks, but that is VS stock clock gtx. almost all gtx today shipped OC's out of the box anyways. plus, the single slot cooling is good for me

X1800XT. It has more features and slightly higher performance to boot, and has double the RAM. Beware that it's dual slot, though, and may be a little loud (not that I have anything to compare to besides my old fanless X300).

Oh, and ATI has prettier demos :D

I went with X1800XT myself. Has great performance, and featureset I use. I do like the single slot cooling on the GTX though :)

I couldn't get either now (AGP motherboard) :p If I were to buy one with the intent to buy a new motherboard, it would have to be the x1800xt. More features and better performance in the latest shader intensive games (COD2 & Fear).

Now it's cheaper at retail!

That is a good price on a good card, for sure. If you know you're staying single card, Monarch deal FTW.

(and you're not a quiet PC guy, which I am not)

I guess it could be noted too the BBA has a cheesy one year warranty, vs lifetime on many 7800GTXs as well, but on a pure performance for dollar basis the XT wins.

X1800XT, better card overall IMO.

EDIT: I also vote to wait for R580 and G71.
