What would you rather have, a p4 2.4b or an amd 2400+ ? (NO overclocking)

if i had to pay for it, definitely the amd with a nice nforce mobo. otherwise, based solely on benchmarks, i think id have to say the intel (avid amd fan that i am)

Why wouldnt you want to overclock it? 🙂 Oh man if you got a C1 or a good Tbred B stepping, the sky's the limit on the overclocking.....

P4. I have had it with the noise, the $100 power supplies, the lame a$$ chipsets (even the Nforce 2 is having problems) and did I say the NOISE!!!.. R

you can check the voltage listed on the box.. thats the easiest way. 1.5 is B0, 1.525 is C1 i belive.
Ass for Intel or AMD, if your not OCing either are good, and it comes down to mobo choice. And why are you yelling about the noise? I havnt noticed to much of a difference etween my 2.4 stock and a XP2400 stock cooling.

2400+ for sure... the P4 doesn't fit my motherboard without modding. 😉

edit: and RickH, if you need a hand getting the AMD to run quietly, all you have to do is speak up 😉 SK-7 plus an 18dB to 21dB 80mm fan will definitely fix it.

If mine is in a Compaq PC and is a P4 2.4Ghz, could it be overclocked? I have info from WCPUID if someone can tell me anything about it

Unlikely, Compaq would be foolish to include any overclocking options in off-the-shelf computers. But it's not like your system is slow as it is, right? 😀

Gaming and surfing Anandtech!

I am building a video editing machine or maybe a better gaming machine. I have acquired 2 512MB Micron/Crucial PC2700 sticks, an ATI AIW 8500DV, an HP 300i DVD+RW, a 120GB Maxtor L01P120 so far thanks to you guys and the deals on here. Now trying to decide on a board and a CPU.

Excellent, get yourself a good case and power supply and you're almost there! 😀 (give the Compaq to your wife if you have one)

Oh, I forgot about the motherboard and CPU. Are you going with AMD, Intel, or undecided?

Oh yeah, got a PowerMax case on the way with 400Watt supply from ComputerGeeks.com and bought the MX700 Logitech yesterday!

I am thinking AMD and the Epox 8RDA+, the MSI 6570 (?) or the ASUS A7N8X with either a 2100+ or a 2500 Barton.

What do you think??

I like my 8RDA+ and it's a nice buy for the money unless you are after a digital S/PDIF-out and/or Serial ATA, in which case the A7N8X-Deluxe makes sense. I wouldn't hesitate to get another 8RDA+, which is more than I can say for some boards I've had.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but generic cheap 400W power supplies from CompGeeks make me look like this ---> :Q It might work fine, but I would rather buy a known quality-brand unit for more money. Hope it works out well for you 🙂

Cheers to a fellow resident of Knox-vegas. P4 2.4B vs. AMD 2400+ ==> Draw. I went with the 2400+ just because I thought the nForce2 MB was the best chipset out at the time, and I was spooked by some of the problems the 845PE chipset was exhibiting. The 8RDA+ and the A7N8X Deluxe is another tough decision and both are ahead of the MSI. If you choose the 8RDA+ over the A7N8X-D, you might have enough left to get a game also, and Epox has better tech support on their products in the unlikely event of a problem from what I hear. Therefore, the slight edge goes to the 8RDA+. Good luck with the new setup. Peace.

I will probably replace that power supply but I liked the case with the window and all 🙂

I tried to get one of those Antec cases that were at Best Buy but ours here sucks and they were OOS 2 weeks ago. I may try again to find a better deal on one.

Epox is good mobo for overclocking. Asus is great brand - not always friendly for overclockers. MSI is probably worst in terms of overclocking. I am not familiar with these particular models though (it is hard to keep up). I suppose that SSE2 is handy for video encoding so this would benefit P4. Virtualdub was optimized for P4 and I was impressed by optimization. The author used Intel compiler to optimize compiled code. I don't know if TMPGEnc (very good and cheap encoder) uses heavily SSE2 but I would rather bet on it. As far as speed is concerned, PC is never fast enough for video encoding using best setting in TMPGEnc so get the fastest CPU you can get (if you cannot afford then overclock it - I would unlock the CPU to get the max so I guess I would pick AMD XP TBred B, get good cooling fan, unlock CPU and push it to the max). P4 might offer similar route. I am not too familiar with Intel products. One thing is sure, Intel was pricey but they had always good products. AMD managed to beat them using Athlon CPU but P4 bounced back and I think that Intel has an edge now. I will support AMD because without them Intel would rip customers off because they would not have competition (monopoly stinks).

Edit: I have AMD XP 2000+ and it takes 7-8 hours to encode 2 hours movie. Trust me 2400+ is not much faster than mine. Get fastest CPU you can get. Push it really hard because you will need every MHz you can get.

Edit. Bottom line is AMD XP or P4. Both are good CPUs. Overclocked AMD XP will probably save you more money

no thread jacking!!! 😛

anyways, this is just for normal everyday use (some photoshop, some gaming)

2400+ on an sis 735 ecs k7s5a (hey, got it for cheep)

-or

2.4b on a sis 645 / intel i845D

remember, NO OVERCLOCKING!! and it's loaded w/ 512mb pc2100 / pc2700
????

No overclocking? A Retail 2.4b P4 on an Intel D845PESVL board. That defines stability, easy setup, and a 3 year warranty.

hey akumax
i would personally go for amd because of the better mobos there are for it(nforce2)
though epox is for overclocking, and you are paying premium for the high quality power circuits, etc..

i'd personally go for the asus a7n8x deluxe, you get a shitload more features for like $40 more..

you can get a very quiet AMD.. Get a $20 SK7 cooler from svc, $2.50 quad led fan @ 2500rpm, very silent and cool system..
