A friend of mine is trying to buy a new (to him) sports car and he can't decide what to get. He's had tons of Japanese sports cars and is thinking American (probably) or German (not as likely...unfortunately). Which would you pick and why?

the new 911 Turbo and GT3 are almost the same exact price, the Turbo is actually more expensive, so i am confused unless the used market is vastly different

C6 Z06

If you see them in person they look as mesmerizing in red (at least the outside) as any Ferrari. Not your typical plastic looking vette.

With 7.0L of displacement and only 500 some horsepower, that leaves ALOT on the table if you want to mod. Where as 500 HP out of a 3L engine with forced induction is already a tight squeeze.

All it would take is a better interior with a little hand stitched suede and some metallic accents and it would be over for everyone else anywhere near the price.

But until then, who cares, I guarantee the person behind you at the 2-1 merge when you let off isn't going to give a rats ass what your center console is made out of.

The Viper will get you the most attention.

But anyways, performance wise, Z06, for a daily driver all year round, 911.

He's looking at a 996, not a 997. You can pick up a 996 Turbo for ~ $42,000, I've yet to see a 996 GT3 for anywhere near that...

This is an uneducated guess but if it matters, I would assume the Porsche is the most prestigious.

I haven't been inside/driven either of these (the closest I've gotten is driving a Z4) so don't take my choice too seriously but I would take the 996 Turbo. My opinion of the Z06 is if you're not tracking it, why not get the C6?

If it's going to be a DD, make sure it's practical. The Z4 when I drove it, for instance, had pretty big blind spots.

Once again, $$. Current markup on available R35's is nearly $30,000.

And good luck finding an R34...

Same argument can be had with the 996 TT, if your not tracking it, why not get a Carerra, C2S or C4S.

Daily driver or weekend car?

Daily driver: C6 Z06 or 996 Turbo
Weekend car: Viper GTS

Viper is definitely not for everyone. I would suggest a test drive to see if he can live with all the comfort shortcomings. 2nd gen Viper GTS with the "dubble bubble" roof looks the best IMO.

It'd be more of a weekend/track/fun car.

Looks wise: The Viper GTS
Performance wise: C6 Z06
Bang for buck wise: C5 Z06
Comfort wise: M Coupe

IMO, the Viper GTS has one of the hottest looking bodies ever to have not made it onto the cover of Sports Illustrated. It has strong lines and powerful curves and a look that just says "fuck sophistication, I got a mallet.". The C6 ZO6 however has some moves to it, power to back it up, and a light weight so it can dance well. The C5 Z06 can be had as low as $25k, can be modded very easily, and with 405HP isn't exactly a slow car to begin with. So it leaves you a lot of scratch for a blower kit or anything else you want. I doubt an LS6 to LS7 swap would be hard at all. The M coupe comes in with the comfort factor. It's going to be the one that you want to take a longer trip in. It'll offer a real trunk, and possibly a back seat depending on which one you get.

No I don't...

New, maybe, but used you can pick up all of them for under $50,000 (although the C6 Z06 is tough).

Viper SRT-10 Convertible, just so I can feel the wind in my hair while I'm doing 200+ mph.
