What would you like to see in OS X 11 (or 10.10)?

1. OpenGL 4.4

2. OpenCL 2.0 (both of the above baked into as many first party apps as possible)

3. Make Messages more than just texts, merge with iChat so I can have multiple google chat accounts, AIM (still alive?), facebook, etc in one concise app.

4. Get Me ZFS or something darn close to it.

5. Clean up/ Speed up iTunes, it's taken on perhaps too many roles.

6. Get a working and interoperable remote desktop (unless it's fixed in newer versions it's horribly broken in 10.7)

7. Photo and Video Match - find photos and videos and host them in the cloud for $4.99/month or some such. Time Capsule Online archival type backups.

8. Spruce up iPhoto (allow albums that are individually backup able so you don't have to initialize 90GB of photos everytime you open it.

9. Cache data in the app store or something, it's so laggy.

I haven't used 10.8 or 10.9 so maybe these things have been fixed. But what are your gripes and wants for the next generation of the OS.

They've been pretty nice to not lock it down for hacks so far, I think it unlikely though it wouldn't surprise me if more than a few of their engineers rolled hacks at home.

This is done. It supports Google Talk, Yahoo, AOL IM, and Jabber servers, in addition to the iMessage thing.

Video chat is still FaceTime, but the transition between those two programs and the contacts application is relatively seamless.

Do you mean like what a Fusion Drive does?

Apple Remote Desktop works fine in 10.8/10.9, VNC support still kinda sucks though. I use LogMeIn instead, it works fine cross-platform.

I retail version that officially runs on non Apple hardware.

-KeithP

I dunno, it's almost easier to install Tonymac's Unibeast than it is to install the official Apple disc haha

I don't have any real complaints. Spotlight works great for finding files. The system is ridiculously stable; I only get kernel panics a few times a year at most, and almost always as a result of screwing around with things. Maybe a virtualized browser system to prevent any kind of infection; I usually run Chrome in VMware for surfing and have it reset on reboot so my primary system doesn't risk getting messed up, but that's not really a big deal either.

I can't think of much. Here is a short list though:

-Kill the animations added with Mavericks like the glitter around new programs, though keep the window closing animations and such.
-I'd like to see "Xcode Express" that serves the purpose of Sublime Text.
-ZFS would be the holy grail

For me though, OSX is really great at the moment. For a daily/work OS I love using it. I made the gradual switch from windows a few years ago and could not go back. I still use Windows for my gaming PC but it always feels clunky when using it.

I caught a 2010 Mac Pro 4.1 on eBay for $650, flashed it to a 5.1 and added 16GB of RAM. Its been awesome. One of the best computer purchases I've ever made.

If you have not used 10.8 or above, you should. App store feels fine to me. I'd rather see iPhoto die or be redone closer to what Lightroom is, I find iPhoto completely superfluous.

Remote desktop...well, go get the Microsoft one ;)

As for what I want, I want proper write support made native for NTFS partitions. I have Windows machines and keep my Lightroom library on a portable hard disk, so I need it to be NTFS (I won't suffer FAT32.) I don't like having to use third party software that makes selecting my start disk impossible (when using bootcamp.)

iTunes is pretty fast for me. Until you try to sync you phone up, then it takes friggen forever.

@Rampant, could you use exFAT?

apparently the new iPhoto is pretty slick, but I've never used aperture or lightroom, so I don't know how it compares. I'm honestly kind of surprised Apple hasn't bought Adobe yet. Put some of that spare change to good use.

And your reasons for said opinion?

Its terrible for simple things. I have a macbook pro and a windows 7 gaming pc. I use them both everyday. Explorer is just way better for simple file management tasks to me. I get frustrated doing things like connecting to shares on my server or just trying to find things. If i have a bunch of things open i feel like its easy to "loose" a window. When they are open they are not anchored anywhere like the taskbar does in windows. I feel that apple had to invent expose or whatever its called these days just to help fix how broken it is.

Finder has tabs. I connected to my share months ago and its been on my shared list since then. I don't understand why people have to keep connecting? Once I got all the shortcuts down, I like finder as much or more than explorer.

I am on 10.8 so no tabs for me, but that is a feature i want. I am just waiting for mavericks to get all the kinks worked out before upgrading. Also tabs only help if you are talking about purely a finder window. when i have a bunch of windows up like a few firefox windows and a couple safari windows or whatever, if i want to find a specific one its hard to do without expose. On windows all my open windows are anchored to the bottom of my screen so i can find any window i want easily. I don't have that same capability on my macbook which frustrates me.

and dont get me wrong, i like mac os, otherwise would not have gotten the macbook, i just dont think its perfect by any means. Same as windows 7. I like it but that does not mean i cant still see room for improvement.

I do lose windows sometimes, but popping mission control allows me to find it. I lose the compose window from Mail all the time.

I've noticed Windows 7's interface doesn't feel as smoothly animated as OSX. Do you notice that?

i have not noticed it, however it may just be a difference in how they do them. I think windows 7 animations are more subtle while mac os seems to make a bigger deal that your window is being sucked down onto the dock. in fact, in my head i sometimes hear a whoosh sound as i minimize windows lol.

@phraeage,

Dock=Task bar, if you mouse over or click and hold an icon in the dock, it will show you a list of every window of that type and you can select them.

I feel like lots of these things like pinch to zoom and little software practices like that need to become public domain so we don't have this common sense feature attrition between companies with large patent portfolios.

I did not know about that. i will give it a try when i get home. From your description of it, its still not as good as the taskbar but better then nothing which is what i had before so thanks!

and i agree about that. Some of those things are fueling the current patent wars and its ludicrous that its about things like pinching and zooming and having your screen spring back when you hit the bottom and stuff like that. How on earth can you patent crap like that. Just because you can do something does not mean you should be able to patent it.
