a blonde, a brunette and a redhead as my roomies...furniture and stuff will get taken care of later.

but really, entertainment center/shelving type stuff for the living room and appliances would be first on the list for me.

Appliances are good, but I really like the idea of a giftcard or cash. When it comes to decorating, furniture, and stuff, the people that live there really know best. How about a nice bottle of champagne to break it in? ;) Really, there is so much stuff that can be useful, you can't go wrong. You can go ugly (hence the gc), but you cant go wrong :)

Shelving for her bedroom might be a good idea, but I'd say her dad will take care of that.

I know the gift certificate is tempting, but I'm leaning toward either the box of several useful things or the DVD player because I'm sure she doesn't have one and I know she enjoys kicking back with a good movie and friends.

I'm wondering if I'm forgetting something that would be really useful for her at school. Most of the nice things that come to mind are really expensive though.

<< Biggo box O condoms....gets busy when you got your own pad >>

Sluggo and I are thinking on the same level.

Other tan that, maybe get her a membership at CostCo or Sams, That way she can get more for her money.

Hmm I mainly skimmed the thread, and my top items would be microwave and espresso machine, perhaps a mini fridge for her room (if she has an apartment and roommates that small space that's just her food/drink can be priceless). George Foreman grills are ok, the larger ones are a pain to clean since the cooking surfaces can't be removed, in college I cooked in my hotpot more than anything else.

Other brainstorming since I don't know a lot of details such as how far from home this is, whether she has a car available, how much stuff she already has, how exactly close you are with her, her parents etc.

A voucher for a train/bus/plane ticket home to visit her parents

Get together with parents and put together some basics for home entertainment system. The centerpiece of a college apartment is the living room, with a battered couch and the best home entertainment center/tv/stereo/surround/dvd/vcr the whole household can scrape together.

A pre-paid cell phone if she doesn't already have a cell. She can then use it as she wants or emergency only, also makes for lazy gifting later, you just refill the phone.

Gift certificates are not as useful/personal as taking her shopping and being there to help choose things or answer questions for her. When I got my first apartment I went with my Dad and we filled a cart with microwave and dishes and such and that was my birthday for that year. You can go to places like Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Pier One, Crate & Barrel, whatever suits your budget. That way you get to help and see the personal touch, and the event is more about the time spent than the money spent.

A tool box and tools, my fiance had a better tool set than I did when we moved in (except that one tool that she lacks and I was born with, you smarta$$es)

Or you could just cheat and get one of those huge bath assortments from bodyworks or the like, but those are gambles on the scents.

d33pt, I was thinking $100, but it's beginning to look like I might need to go a little over that for something really nice.

There is a Sam's near where she'll be, the 3 of them could get together and do the grocery shopping for a semester at a time there.

She'll have her car there and she'll just be a two-hour drive from home. She has a cell phone already. The tools are good idea for the box of useful things.

Dave, I don't have a clue.
