What would you have done?

Inspired by Xanis's thread

Sometime last week I went to the post office with 12 letters I wanted to mail certified mail. I got in line for the automated machine that lets you buy your postage and certification on the spot, instead of getting in the way longer line waiting for someone to do it for me.

Anyway so when I get up there, I start buying postage and getting my certified stickers, each letter took maybe a minute and a half. By the time I got to the 5th letter a small line had formed behind me. So I felt guilty, the lady behind me had 1 package, and behind her maybe 2. So I got finished up my 5th letter, and got back to the end of the line to give the other people a chance. Waited a few minutes and went back to my letters.

This time, a longer line formed, and there was an old lady with 3 packages sighing constantly. Seeing as I didn't have anywhere important to be, I decided, alright F it, and stopped and got into the back of the line again. Unfortunately when it was her turn, her credit card didn't work and she got angry and left. This time around I had maybe 4 people to wait for but when I got to the front I finished off my last 3. All in all, 12 letters took me around half an hour. A few of my friends said they would have just been an ass and done all 12 at once. Should I have just got in the longer line and waited for an employee to do it?

Cliffs:
1) Had to mail 12 letters
2) Used the automated postage machine instead of waiting in line
3) Small line formed, felt guilty, went to the back of the line
4) Another line formed, felt guilty again, went to the back of the line
5) Took a little more than half an hour

I would have waited in line for an employee to handle it since I imagine that people go to the automated machines to speed through the post office. But I see nothing wrong with doing all 12 at once if you so chose to do it that way.

It sounds like the USPS needs to speed up their automated system.

As long as that took, I still got done faster than the people who were waiting in line for an employee to help them.
