What would you guys do?

So my old computer crashed yetserday. I live by tigerdirect and frys. So I went and purchased a whole bunch of new parts (cpu, mobo, video card, memory, hard drive, case). The case I got is the p180 and I love the design, however the motherboard 12v cable is about 3 inches too short on my current power supply (a 500W Ultra cheapo). So right now my case is on its side with the powersupply hanging off the side of it. So I need a extension for the 12V motherboard cable. I don't think I can find one of these locally, so that means I'd have to wait until at least monday/tuesday to get my computer all put together. If I could find an extension locally I'd go for that. If I can't find that, I'm thinking I might just go buy a new power supply. My 500W isn't the best and I don't know how well it will hold up in my new system anyway. The main power hogs are the CPU (e6600), and two video cards (a x1800gto which is going to be replaced by a x1900xt, and an old 9250). So what do you guys think I should do?

Fry's has an 12V extension. I had the P180 and had the same problem. I just went to Fry's to buy a new one. 500 W is plenty for any modern-day computer.

Really??? Would you happen to know the part number? I looked on outpost.com and I couldn't find it. Or do you know exactly what it's called so I can call my local frys and ask them?

What you have to worry about more than Watts are your 12V rails. Really, before you do anything else, you should get a more reliable PSU.

The PSU doesn't seem so bad, but I do share your concerns as to how good my PSU is. Once I get windows installed I'm going to try and figure out how the rails look. What would be good under load?

Which model Ultra is it? Some are good, some are not.

No, I don't know the part #. Not everything that Fry's has is on outpost.com. I pretty sure that every Fry's will have it as it's a fairly standard cable.

Newegg has an extension that would do the trick. Not super-cheap, but at least it's under $10.

That's exactly what I need. What do you guys think of me just cutting the cable and extending it will some extra PSU cable I have laying around? Doesn't seem like the best idea but I'm impatient. Or does my current PSU suck anyway and I should just go get a new one?

he's asking if he should get a new one also? read the thread, i hear it helps.

I'm not familiar with that psu, i usually see it come up as a hot deal. PSU is prolly the most important part, if it craps it could mess up a lot of things ^^. If you got the money, i'd say buy a new psu. It will last you awhile and puts your mind at ease

I think you should get the Enhance 400W or 500W from ewiz.com and use the Ultra 500W as a backup.

i know this is irrelevent, but your computer crashed so you get a new one? why? and you can technically extend the cable, but unless you know what you're doing, i would wait.

Yeah. My old one was 4 years old. I figured, why waste money repairing a super old/outdated machine. The only thing semi-new on it was the PSU because my other one died a year ago. Wouldn't extending a cable just be cutting wires, strip the casing, attach wire inbetween the cuts?

He saya a new one becuase his cables DONOT reach......not becuase what he has is a crappy PSU...
All he needs are those newegg extenders....

The new Ultras are not that bad...in fact if you will...... an Ultra that is working is like an Antec PSU that is working......some have lasted for years.

Please, people need to stop recommending these things in any thread that is at all related to Power Supplies. Yes, Wintact makes great supplies, but it is still a long shot to say that the OP is going to buy a 1KW or something instead of buying a 24pin extension. IMO, the poplularity of PC P&C is really causing a negative effect around here.

I went by fry's and they didn't have what I needed so I ordered two extenders from newegg (just in case one is to short). I hate waiting 🙁. In any case, if my current PSU ends up sucking I can always go buy a new powersupply. Also, I'd probably need the extenders for any PSU I purchased unless the 12V Mobo cable was much longer than normal. I looked at the specs of some high-end enermax PSU's and the cables wouldn't have been long enough. I think the case would be the same for Seasonic, Sparkle, etc... The layout of my mobo and the p180 just don't play well for the length of PSU cables.

PC power and cooling is expensive @.@. I'd prolly try to pickup a seasonic or something. The one that you have is pretty good also i think. I read a couple articles that said enhance + silvercool are just rebadges of the FSPs, which are good PSU. It looks like you'll sitll have to end up waiting =/

Not all of PC&C's power supplies are super expensive. Plus, if someone wants the best power supply they are it. Period.

Of course, you can always get a $15 600watt p/s that someone etched a xxZ brand on and priced it at $79 and cross your fingers. :laugh:

Those guys are selling some super expensive/really nice power supplies. $500 for a power supply seems crazy. I don't think I'll ever need anything that nice. I don't really overclock much and I won't ever do the multi-video card setup.
