What would you get if you were me? HD related...

so i need some more space. right now i'm looking at two options.

a.) pay 130 or something for an 80 gig Seagate Barracuda IV
b.) pay 240 or something for a 100 gig WD 1000 BB SE

my question is this... i don't run a server or anything, but i do work with a lot of large files (dvd ripping and stuff, avi's, etc). would the performance gain from the WD be enough to justify the added cost?

thanks for any input you may have.

probably as a boot drive... i plan on doing a clean install of xp on the new drive, then slowly migrating files over from the old one, then eventually using the old one just for storage.

The HD is the biggest bottleneck in your computer - you might as well get the fastest performing drive you can afford.

<< OR, you could get the WD 1000BB without the extra 6 megs, for about $120 at Sam's. 🙂

Agreed.. The WD1000BB performs quite well, so much so that I got myself one.. 🙂

It seems like 60 to 80 GB has the monetary sweet spot right now for hard sizes, so if the drives are very similar performance wise, then I would get the 80GB one, but that's just me.

With only the 6Mb cache being the difference at double the price? Hell no, I'll get two of the BB regular series and then just used a caching software to use physical memory and probably get the same or even better results.

<< problem would be finding that 100GB'er at sams 🙂 >>

yea, so between the two drives i specified... what would you do?

BETWEEN THOSE TWO, I would probably get the Seagate (a nice drive). $110 for 20gigs and 6 megs is a LOT of money. IF, however, I could get any drive I wanted, I would either get the 800BB or 1000BB for the cheapest I could get it for (with or without the Sam's deal), or the new Maxtor D740X with FDB.

Don't be so quick to give up on the Sam's deal. It is still a Sam's stocked item (did not end in .91), will be coming back in stock, and there is still half a month good on the deal. If I were you I would check click and pull at your favorite stores daily. If you have a nice manager at your local Sam's, ask him/her to hold one for you. 🙂
