ok...i just started a new job and got a signing bonus. thing is, i got the signing bonus over the summer.

i received my first paycheck in the mail today and notice that they gave me another signing bonus. i am certain that this is an error.

i'am going to let human resources know first thing monday morning, but i wanted to know what everyone else would have done.

thanks

I would do excatly what you are going to do, because then I would seem like an honest employee and because I'm sure they would find out eventually if you didn't own up.

It may even be a test on your honesty :Q:p

<< I'd tell them in fear of them finding out somehow anyway. >>

I agree. Someone somewhere will probably find the mistake and it will come back to bite you when you don't have the money.

tell them, bring in you stub, and ask if it was a mistake, can you deduct half from 2 checks?
it may be a computer/clerical error,or it May be a "Test",;)
I worked at a small Gas Station years ago,the owner,on purpose would screw up somebodies paycheck, about once every couple of months. He did mine, and I called him up,said uh you paid me for 55 hours, but i only worked 45!
He said,"the manager didn't call me to say your check was messed up".
I told him, well i didn't mention to him or no one else,as i know You do the payroll, not the manager.
The owner says, good well consider it a bonus,as you passed my test,to see if you would notice, and ask about it,or just keep quiet;Or ,Blab about the "owners Screwup" to all the people at the garage..
I was only 18,and said to him:) uh why would you want to test me to see if i would notice?
"To see if your Honest, and you are.Now you are the Night Manager,if you want the job, working
2pm-10pm,for another 50 cents an hour."

Most definately, return it. Make sure you get some visibility when you do. Notify your new boss instead of the payroll department, if possible.

I have always been completely hones in my professional career (unfortuanately, I'm not quite so virtuous in my personal life). Honesty in the workplace has yielded dividends for me. It takes a while, but eventually you will be recognized for your honesty. After several incidents like returning the check, confessing to errors, giving the right person credit, etc., you will find that your word will go unchallenged. That's how you want it. You will then be immune for slanderers and incompetent politickers, and if comes down to your word versus a liar's, your superiors will believe you.

Also, I find my policy of complete honesty to make my job easier by eliminating any moral dilemnas. I can concentrate on my job instead of concentrating on CYAs and excuses. I waste no time deciding the right thing to do; its easy, just do the honest thing.

Please consider all of the above advice to be null and void if your new job involves, sales, marketing, politics, or law.

Good luck in your career.
