Hello,
My name is Bryan and I am looking for advice and information on my future career. Currently I am 22, married, living in Tennessee. When I graduated High School I took some classes that let me pass the A+ and Net+ courses, and I obtained these certifications. Because I live in a very rural area there were not really any jobs available in this field, now I actually work for a local company selling log homes as my fulltime job and I do some computer repair on the side. I have also picked up a few jobs building websites for people and find that I enjoy that more than anything, although I have not had any training for it. I have a strong desire to get some more training and further my skills, but I am a little confused as to which direction to proceed in. I am looking for training that would help me meet the following objectives:
- Allow me to work on the side to develop my skills in the new field while retaining my full time job. Hopefully make decent money on the side:
- Be an in-demand skill that I would be able to secure a full time job with.
- Ultimately I would like to be able to move near some friends in Montana, but the local job market is very poor. I would LOVE to be able to work from anywhere in this field, enabling me to live anywhere I want.
I have had a couple of people suggest that I look into training in ASP, PHP, SQL, and .NET development. Would you suggest anything different and why? Also, please bear in mind my current skills when suggesting a course of action. Most of my computer experience is limited to hardware, and minor software repairs. As I mentioned above I have also played around a little with building a few websites, but they have mostly been an experimentation in Photoshop and Frontpage. (I know, I know, but it all that I know) See kyhillscedar.com and underwoodloghomes.com for examples of what I have done. With my limited knowledge should I try to learn something else before tackling any of the ASP, PHP, SQL, and .NET categories?
I apologize for being so wordy but I would really appreciate any insight that anyone has. Responses at bdspears@gmail.com ar
