What would you do?

Well I just went to the cafeteria at Shands (the hospital I work at). The bill came out to $3.28. I payed with a $20 bill and gave the $.28

I then went to get a drink from the vending machine and realized I didn't have enough change so I wanted to use a dollar. As I looked at my wallet I realized that the cashier gave me $21 by mistake. She gave me a $10, 2 $5, and a $1 instead of 2 $1. Should I go back and return the money?

Cliffs...
Cashier messed up and gave me $21 instead of $17.

Have you ever worked as a cashier? Coming up short is not something you want to do.
Regardless of this, why would you even consider keeping extra money when they make a mistake.

Of course you should go and return the money. Whats more important here, an extra $4 or the cashier losing her job over this? Even if she doesnt lose her job or even if it was $1000, just do the right thing and return the money. You'll feel good about it as well.

well...in the spirit of thanksgiving...go 'head & return the $4 OR buy that same cashier some lunch/breakfast.

This made me think of something that happened this week as well. I have been going to subway for lunch with a kid I know from school every once and awhile. The kid wears almost the same cloths everyday. He can hardly afford new clothes, let alone good food. He bought his sub, and the last gave him TWO TENS instead of two ones!! My friend gave the money back.

if he can't afford it, he shouldn't eat out then.

To the OP... you know what you should do. It's a given.

I'd already done what I was going to do before this thread. I'm just wondering what people here would have done. (if that makes any sense).

Don't cashiers generally have to balance their registers? I've never been one, this is just what I understand to be true. Keeping incorrect change is taking money from the cashier. Unless a cashier was particularly rude to me, I'd feel bad taking money out of their pocket.

Even if they are rude to you, just give the money back and be the better person.

I dunno. I'd be afraid to return the money for fear of being accused of stealing.

Everybody has heard the horror stories of accidently leaving a store without paying for something, coming back to pay for it, and being treated like a criminal or even arrested. IMO, if you already walked away from the counter, don't go back, it might be more trouble than its worth.

I accidently walked out of Wal-Mart with a small item. I forget what it was, something under $5. I realized it in the parking lot when I was loading my car. I went back inside to pay for it. Security got called in, I got put in the holding room. Basically they treated me as if I got caught shoplifting. After being treated like a criminal for a few hours, they let me go. I never got a chance to pay for it. Blegh.

I've heard similar storys on ATOT before.

Strange, you asked what you should do in the OP.

Why the '😕'?

If you're young and male people assume you're a criminal. I once got chased by security because I had a book in my pocket at a bookshop. Of course it was my book, and had nothing to do with the store, but they didn't care.

When I was in my teens and very early twenties I might have kept the money but nowadays I would give it back.

This has actually happened to me twice in the past month and both times I corrected it. I guess having a kid will do that to you. 😀

If you believe in karma then you ought to give it back. Its only 4 dollars. What is the cashier going to do, call security for giving her the 4 bucks back?

If it was <$1 I'd keep it, it's not worth the hassle, but over $1 and it's in the same building? I say, give it back.

Thanks to that prejudice, I now have a criminal record..

Yeah right.... If you need to even question yourself in a situation like this, you should never trust yourself. Personally, I ALWAYS, count my change in front of the cashier before walking away. And have had this happen a few times before.

Return the money. The only time I can think of NOT returning the money is if you got too much change and didn't honestly realize it until you were 100 miles away.
