Activity on forums like this one has steadily declined for many years now. It's almost surely due to social media in large part.

I consider forums part of social media. But I do think that would explain a lot of it is the changes in that. I think the glut of moderate people we used to have on here likely moved onto Reddit. And I think a lot of the dipshits moved onto the chans and other forums where they could be dipshits without getting ridiculed as much.

Some of it I think is also just general life change. We used to have a ton of college aged people and I think they transitioned onto careers and families and the like.

Population is increasing. Active forum users are decreasing. Explanation: Potential new users are increasingly using other social media.

I would love to see some stats on this forum's popularity and membership over the last decade.

It began as a computer enthusiast forum. Over the years, many other computer forums have started, many of them much more specialized and with more knowledgeable participants. When you have a technical question, you may as well go to where you're likely to get the best answer.

And computers themselves are rapidly falling out of favor and being replaced by tablets and smart phones. Mostly, it leaves gamers and older users still primarily using desktop systems. Needless to say, there are MUCH better gaming forums.

All you have to do is click "New Posts" any time of the day or night and see where the traffic is - Off Topic, Politics and News, followed by some light activity in the tech forums.

So, the forum is dying. Big deal. Most things started and run by people do.

We've seen things most people wouldn't believe… forums on fire over the console wars. We've watched nerd tears glitter in the dark near the GamerGate. All those… moments… will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time… to die…

They didn't show the part where the doves were fried.

increase ad revenue and make everyone watch a 30 second commercial between page clicks and posts.

Dubious. Most of us wouldn't be here if we cared that much about social media. You can argue that they're growing while we aren't, but that's not the same thing as them growing at our expense.

We were here before them. We'll very likely still be here when they're gone.

Also I'd say what I'd do, but then I'd get banned. :ninja:

My thoughts exactly!

I would introduce embarrassing spelling and grammar mistakes into everyone else's posts to make myself appear smarter. When people ask me why it says I edited their posts I will imply that they were much worse before I edited it and I only changed the minimum to improve understanding. When they balk and accuse me of introducing the error then I will point to an unedited post that I made first that has the correct usage, proving that I know the correct way and, thus, it had to be the other person.
