What would you do with a sticky networking thread if you had one?

I'm thinking it's long past time for a "sticky" FAQ thread here in the Networking Forum.
Anybody else agree?

If so, then post what you think would be most beneficial to folks here in the forum, especially from the perspective of eliminating redundant threads, etc.

Personally, I'd like to see:
* 586B cable pinouts for Cat5, both regular and crossover.
* A cornucopia of Jack's links (go Jack go Jack get busy it's your birthday!) about various topics (comparing routers, wireless info)
* list of reference links to basic networking info sites (practically networked, definitions, RFCs, etc.)

Anyone have any suggestions or info about how to get such a thread, please let us know.

thanks,
TallGeese

I wouldn't mind seeing a list of the various ways to share a net connection (ICS, hardware router, linux router, etc.) as well as basic info about each and advantages/disadvantages. Also, info on port forwarding for those who want to set up servers, or allow certain apps that don't work with IP masquerading/NAT to function.

An FAQ stickythread would be great. The topics posted would be an excellent start.

Maybe include a link to places like NetIQ (Qcheck), DSL Reports, and other performance-checking places too.

How shall we commence?

Do we need to complie a post and ask the mods to stickafy it or what?

Who would like to be the FAQ poster/maintainer?

I'd volunteer, but the last time I tried to post a link it sent everyone to a home for wayward girls scouts.....

Great idea Tallgeese!

A one-time bump, for further consideration for the non-weekend crowd.

It's a great idea; What do we need to do to proceed?

I totally agree, not just for the sake of answering the same questions, but also for quick and easy reference.

Pictures of me? 😀

But seriously, we would definitely need to include something about "We won't help you crack your company's firewall" for all the n00bs to see (not that they would read it).

We should probably make it like a Mad-Lib, so they can fill it in to fit whatever suits their particular situation:

WE WON'T HELP YOU CRACK YOUR ________'S FIREWALL

Sure don't wanna exclude anybody from being the best idiot they can be! 😀

Actually, I think that a sticky thread would be great, but that it should simply link to the existing FAQ. That should be filled out with answers to most of the common questions we get here. We know what is asked and could pretty easily summarize them into coherent FAQ's to answer 80% of the questions. Jack has done a good job at getting some stuff into it, but more should contribute.
