Alright, I have an Opteron 146 Stepping CABYE 0540 FPBW...It's One of the best stepping in the Opteron series (if not the best). It's got pretty high demand on ebay, as I've seen them go for like $275-$320. Now, I've been thinking, should I sell it get a 170?
I do quite a bit of multi-tasking and movie ripping. So would it benefit me that much?
Currently i'm clocked at 2.9Ghz so basically, i'll be losing a few hundred MHz but getting Dual core possible for little additional money.
So is it worth doing it?
What would you do..I dunno what i want to do.. part of me tells me to keep it and its like having an FX-57 and then at the same time i do wish i had dual core.......GRRR i hate computers

If you get a good 165, you might keep the same OC and not lose any money. Mine does 3.0. With movie ripping, I can easily encode a DVD and not lose anything on BF2.

Here is another source for steppings.

OP, please note that themusgrat is using water cooling to get that high of an overclock with the 165. It seems that most 165's hit a 2.6-2.8 wall on air cooling though a few have gone higher than that.

My 165 is currently at 2.52 and because I am only at 1.4v and hitting 40c max I can definitly go higher but I have not tried yet. In your case I would definitly get the 165 or another dual core as the benefits when mutlitasking are amazing. I did not really notice much difference at first when I upgraded from my Athlon XP 3200+. But then one day I was playing COD 2 and after I quit the game I realized that I had left an instance of prime95 running from earlier when I was benching. It had been going the whole time while I was playing the freaking game at full res, details, and AA smoothly!!!! That was what completly sold me :)

Well, I just got my opty stable 3.0ghz at just 1.58V, Full load temps at 42....So I think im going to stick with the opty until maybe the new socket comes out for AMD.

I think i can't really beat 3ghz amd for 200 bucks.
