What would you do - phone and carrier

I'm currently with Sprint. I have a Galaxy S4 that is apparently bugged because it slows down and essentially stops after a couple month of very light use and I have to reset it back to factory original and lose everything. Pain in the arse. Plus I'd like to upgrade anyways, had this one a looong time.

So I'm off my contract at Sprint. I could buy one of their phones, but I don't want to pay so much for the new tech, even the over time options, or be locked into some plan to get a reduced price. I'd rather just buy an unlocked phone with slightly older technology on the cheap, then be able to upgrade whenever I want when new phones come out.

However, I heard if you buy an unlocked phone you could well have to get some card from Sprint to make it work, and that can be a pain in the arse, almost hellish to get from them. I indeed went to the Sprint store and asked them if I bought an unlocked phone what do I need to do to get it to work with the Sprint network, and he was completely unhelpful, saying "you just have to bring it in and see if it will work, some will some won't". Obviously purposefully trying to be unhelpful and discourage me from buying a phone from anyone other than Sprint.

I like Sprint's $70 unlimited talk/text/data, want to keep the unlimited option so I never have to worry about overages. But the other major networks don't seem to offer this (at least for anything approaching that price).

What do you think you would do in my shoes? I see Metro PCS has it looks like $60 for an unlimited plan - but do they have a decent network? Any easier to get unlocked phones to work with their network?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I was actually looking at the Nexus 6, but won't I still have the problems getting it to work on the Sprint network?

Thanks.

Well, I would look at my data usage and determine if I really need unlimited data. It is trivially easy to keep track of data usage so I wouldn't put much value in "not worrying" about overages. If you do indeed need unlimited data, if it is because of streaming services like Netflix, I would look at T-Mobile's new deal where streaming from some services doesn't count against your bandwidth.

In short, if I were in your shoes I would do everything possible to find a way out of using Sprint.

That being said, if you really need Sprint, look here...

I would call and say that you have a Nexus 6 and can you use it on their network. If they say yes, which I am guessing they will since Sprint sells the Nexus 6, ask what the procedure is to get it to work.

Then, go into a different Sprint store where the employees know what they are doing (good luck with that) and set it up.

Moto X (2nd Gen) with Republic Wireless.

FWIW, many rumors of the new Moto X 'Pure' model to be available on Republic in 2016.
