What would you do if this happened to you? (Long Story)

I've been considering getting a new vehicle for a while now and looking around at different models. Friday when the truck started acting up a little, I decided that was it and I was going to go and finally take the plunge.

About a month ago I had gone to a dealership where I had bought two vehicles previously and I saw a nice Frontier Crew Cab that I seriously considered buying. I told the salesman that I thought I wanted it, but I was going to go home and think about it and I would be back the next day to get it if I decided I wanted it. I decided to wait at that time and didn't go back and didn't hear from the salesman, so I didn't give it much thought.

Friday I went back to the same dealership and was looking around and a different salesman came out to talk to me. I saw a truck I really liked except for the color. He told me that he could check around at other dealerships and get me one just like it in the color I wanted, but he would have to have a $200.00 check as a deposit to show that I was really serious about it before he could go and get it. I told him that I would give him the check, but that I would have to know something by the next day because I wanted to get a deal done this weekend. He said he would know something for sure by the next day. In the meantime, the other salesman I had talked to before came by and gave him my paperwork from the last time I had been in and I could tell that he was kind of pissed that I hadn't come back to him this time, but the other guy had come up to me when I got there and I couldn't remember the previous salesman's name at the time. I left the check and the dealership and told the salesman that I would be talking to him later.

I had been to a Toyota dealership earlier in the day and had talked to a salesman about a Tacoma that I liked, but the payment was too high and I told him I couldn't buy at that price. He asked me about leasing instead and I told him I had never leased a vehicle and didn't know much about it. He said that he could talk to the leasing manager and see if he could get me a better deal, but that the guy was with another customer at the time and it might be a while. I told him that I was going to go look around at some other places but promised him I would be back to see what they could offer. I went back to the Toyota place and told the salesman that I had decided on a Nissan, but thanks anyway. He brought the leasing manager over and he told me about leasing and kept coming down down down on the monthly payment and throwing in accessories for free until it was just too good a deal to pass up.

I went back to the Nissan dealership and told the salesman what had happened and asked him how much better a deal he could offer on a lease. It wasn't much better, so I told him that I was considering getting the Toyota now. Instead of trying to work out a better deal, and keep in mind that there was only $500 difference in the sticker price of two vehicles, he starts going on about how I had given him my word that I was going to buy the Nissan from him and how I couldn't go back on my word. I thought it was getting a little weird so I told him that I would be back later and let him know something.

I went back to the Toyota dealership and they told me that if I bought the truck I could bring it back the next day and they would put all the free accessories on it for me then and now the monthly payments were only two dollars a month more than I had been paying for my '97 model, 15,000 miles a year for 48 months and a higher residual than on the Nissan. I told them they had a deal, but that I had to go back to the Nissan dealer to tell him I didn't want them looking for a truck and to get my check back. One of the managers there said he had a friend who worked at the Nissan dealership and he called and told him to tell the salesman that I wasn't going to be buying from them so that he wouldn't be wasting his time looking for my truck at another dealership. Keep in mind that the Nissan salesman hadn't worked out a deal with another dealership for the truck I wanted yet. I went back to the Nissan dealership, but the salesman had already left for the evening and he hadn't left my check there so I was going to have to come back for it the next day.

Today I went back to the Nissan dealership as soon as it opened at 9:00 and went in to the salesman's office. I said I decided to get the Toyota instead. He goes into this yelling fit about how I had given him my word that I was going to buy the truck from him and how I had no values. Then he threw my check down on his desk and said Take your damn check and don't ever come back here again. I was shocked and just said That's a strange way to act. He said You come in here saying you want to buy two trucks and don't take either deal. I was furious by now and yelled at him that I had bought two vehicles from that dealership long before he got there and then I just shook my head and said This is too weird and walked out. I could understand him being disappointed that the deal didn't go through, but his behavior was just way out of line.

I started to go straight to the managers office in the building next door and tell someone what had happened, but I always make myself try to take some time and calm down when I'm upset before I do anything when I'm mad. I went and got the accessories put on my new Toyota and told the salesmen at the Toyota place what had happend and they said that guy sounded completely nuts. So then I started thinking that maybe he is. I started worrying about the fact that this whacko has my name, address, phone number, social security number, and credit information and thinking that maybe I should go back to the dealership and talk to a manager and ask them if they could just get my paperwork from this guy and give it to me to put my mind at ease about that anyway. Then I started thinking that if I go there and tell them what happened, it might make this guy even more nuts and make the whole situation worse if he really is crazy. What if they fired him? What if they didn't particularly care and I didn't get my paperwork back? The nut would know I had complained and still have it. I didn't know what the best course of action would be so I just came on back home.

So what would you do? Just let it go and hope that the guy does too? But then what if he does do something and I didn't make a complaint at the time? Should I go back and try to get my paperwork from the guy through management and take a chance on making him go off again? Should I just call the dealership and tell them what happened and at least have a record of it just in case, but take the chance on bringing it all up with the guy again?

Anyone who's still left after reading all this, what would you do?

Whew. Ok, um, I would run him over in that nice new Toyoter of yours. That, or just forget about it. I don't think he's nuts. He might have just been having a bad day/week/year. Have fun with your new truck.

I stopped after reading "I've been considering". Do you have a Cliff Notes version of this epic novel? :p

looks like the salesman was desperate for the deal. Some dealerships are like that.. its a high pressure area to work in.
I suggest you telling the manager, but then also keep an eye on the credit rating (if you got CCDS or credit protection from one of your card companies.. give them a heads up).

Also might want to report to the BBB and the local police (just in case).

nateholtrop, um...ok.

BMdoobieW, I hope you're right. Thanks.

RossMAN, you were warned. :p

LordMaul, the thought had crossed my mind, but I decided it would affect my credit rating.

The_good_guy, yeah it's my credit rating that I'm most worried about. I just hate that someone like that has such access to all my information. I think I'll take your suggestion about seeing what I can do to take preventative measures. Thanks.

definitely go get your paperwork back and complain to the manager. He should be held accountable for his behavior. If its too high pressure for him, he can find a job elsewhere.
