What would you do if there was a draft?

I would...

  • Do nothing and hope that I am not drafted

  • Be excused or exempt for a valid reason

  • Enlist in the hopes of choosing where I end up

  • Dodge the draft

  • Be a conscientious objector

  • There was a draft and I dodged it/objected

  • There was a draft and I was excused/exempt

  • There was a draft and I enlisted

  • It wouldn't matter because I am already enlisted

  • I am from a country that does not have a draft system

I've pondered this sometimes and I'm not quite sure what I would do. The ways I see it there are three options, maybe four. Dodge the draft, enlist in hopes of roughly choosing your position (or at least service), don't enlist and hope you're not drafted, or not worry because you'd be excused (full time school, physical disability, past the draft age, whatever). I've talked it over with a friend before, and I think I'd either hope not to get drafted or enlist and aim to be a medic or fly evac choppers.

What would you do? This is primarily for US citizens; if your country's draft laws are similar than feel free to vote, but I'm too lazy to look up discrepancies in the various draft systems in the world. Feel free to make multiple choices (i.e. you were drafted, you are now exempt, but if you were eligible you would enlist).

Canada hasn't had a draft since WWI and it will never be implemented here again. Judging by the number that fled during Vietnam, I can't imagine imagine drafted/forced soldiers being all that effective.

If they began a draft I'd want to shoot myself before all the 'smart' or emo kids joined. I'd have to come up with some open door policy where they'd have to hump 12 miles with 80-100 lbs. of equipment during a warm Summer month in the south in order to even formulate their first question.

I mean, seriously, enlisting isn't the end of the world. It's the end of the world for about 4-6 months before you get to a unit. Maybe a little longer before you even see a woman again. Then again, I would like to subject a chunk of the population to some austerity and personal sacrifice just so they could really appreciate a convenience store.

Valid question. I'm going to leave that ambiguous, partly because there are only so many poll options and partly because I wouldn't be able to decide on a situation.

Make sure the doors and windows are fully closed.

If you don't you'll end up with cold meat.

I assume boot camp would quickly shape up those types. Hell, I'm quite the smart alec but I think I know well enough to not antagonize a drill sergeant.

I'm already in the reserves or whatever that shit is.
I tried to enlist in marines, but have been rejected due to too many surgeries.
I wish I could just do a civilian job, but they require you to go through all the training n shit. Meh.

I'd be happy as hell. I am too old to be drafted, but all of these pieces of crap that live in my neighborhood are just the right age to go to Iraq and be killed.

I'd serve. I actually thought about joining the military when I was in college, but...

I: am gay; have vision problems that aren't correctable with lenses, contacts, or surgery; have flat feet

Oh right, don't ask don't tell. Or rather, if you tell them you can't even enlist right?

My vision isn't the greatest either, but if you're fine with glasses I don't see it being an issue.

I've been told by coworkers who survived the Vietnam draft era that I wouldn't be selected because of my age and having 3 kids, but who knows if they would use the same rules. If it came down to draft or enlist, I'd probably enlist to try and get into something interesting.

if there is a draft, there will be much less social pressure on friends/loved ones when they are deployed for extended periods of time

I think they go from like age 24 and down to 18 then they hit the old people up?

EDIT 2. THE LOTTERY
A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. 18-year-olds and those turning 19 would probably not be drafted.

Wouldn't fret too much because I'm 32, college educated, married, and have a kid. I'd be at the back of the line. And if that wasn't enough I'd tell Sammy to take a flying fuck because I tried to enlist in the reserves when I was 18 and got declined because of medical reasons (one kidney). If I wasn't good enough for him then, I ain't good enough now.

Yup, no sense in winning a war when the citizens are all fucked up from losing their parents and shit.

I probably wouldn't dodge. I'm pretty sure I'd be a terrible infantryman, though. But with an engineering background, I'd hope they would have a better use for me.

Kind of depends on the conflict as well. WW2, for example, I think would have been a worthy cause to give my life. Vietnam, not so much.
