I agree. Keep in mind that as pay rates go down for physicians, smarter people will go to a different field, leading to more incompetent doctors.
That is true. I don't think it would be good for anyone if we ended up having a significant oversupply of MDs to the point where they had to worry about unemployment, under-employment, and cutthroat competition. As a public policy matter, we want MDs to be able to focus on providing medical care and not worrying about job security. We don't want them to suffer from the kinds of pressures that lead to the types of ethical problems that afflict many lawyers, Wall Street traders, bankers, and business executives.
My point was that phyicians should be a little more humble and thankful that they have been given a very protected and privileged status.
Of course, I also advocate a reduction in the number of lawyers and MBAs that are produced in order to reduce the amount of underutilized or unused education in this country and thus the amount of human suffering (people with degrees and loan debt but without jobs in their fields) and economic waste.
