What would you do if Google decided to shutdown their search engine?

Well? Inspired by my "Google failed on me" thread. They're actually extremly powerful. A lot things would go out of business, I think.

There are plenty of search technologies similar to google. If it folds over some other one will take it's place.

Search based advertisement isn't a google exclusive. If google folds Anand can always pay for services with overture or yahoo, if they don't already.

True, BUT google is the BIGGEST IIRC. Everyone I know goes to google. Everyone.

That kinda goes back to my first point. Someone will take it's place. It's not like if google shuts down there will never be a site to take it's place.

Of course but many sites are "google"-optimized, etc. We would have to register with the new search engine and do optimations for that particiular search engine again.

Google is still private owned. I'm betting they'd go public or 'sell' to a public company before they shutdown. Sounded like going public was NOT in their plans based on crap that comes along with doing so. Thus, I think they are financially sound still. I'd be worried if they do go public or were sold to a bigger fish.

Yahoo! tried to make their name a verb, but it never worked, even with them and google being all buddy-buddy.
But google is a name and a verb, and you always google for something as the first step to finding anything on the web.
