I'm a little lost and spent much of my time trying to figure out what to do :(. My boss asked me to write up specifications for a job that I'm currently working on but I have never written anything related to this type of work. :( Crap I better think of something quick.

I would be straight up with him and tell him "I have never done this, and I don't think I am the most suitable person for it. Frankly I don't even want to do this. Actually, I hate this job and have no desire to do learn anything new". I would be polite but firm. No bitching and moaning. That will happen when I get laid off.

Well, let's see. I have never had any experience in plastics, but I got a job in plastics! So I had to learn 90% of what I do!

Just learn it and go on!

Exactly. It's called VAPOR WARE. Sell first, build later. Even when it comes to your boss.

If there's a tight deadline on it, and you have no clue about HOW, then I'd think about telling him that you've never had an opportunity to do that sort of work before... and that you'll work on it.

Sigh. That is exactly what I...

er... you'll need lots of experiences to figure it out perhaps at least 5 to 10 years?

You can always get inspired by guys who are able to write a dissertation in a completely unknown to them field of science in a week or two. This has always shocked me, but there is nothing impossible if you work with information right.

Yes, that would be a good start. However, I'd make the document very neat. Use MS Word and ensure your final version of the document is properly formatted and neat.

However, while reading this thread, another question came to mind. Why is your boss asking you to write up what you currently do? Is he/she thinking of firing you and the job description that you create will be utilized to find the next candidate?

Seriously, I'd do a fine job of *embellishing* all of the activities that you currently do. Who knows, maybe once your boss realizes how MUCH you do, you could get a decent raise out of the process. Good luck! ;)
