Ok right now i work at a large corporation been there about month and a half now not really doing anything that relates to my "targeted" goal which is hardware and networking I am working on a mainframe and doing tape backup jobs....ya fun stuff. Then this new computer store opens up and my friend's friend runs in and is looking for people to work in it. He is willing to pay me 14.00/hr whereas my other job pays 10.00/hr. The extra 4.00/hr will help out a LOT! seeing as how I am college student. He (store owner) finds out next week about his loan and all that type of stuff. My question to you is should i leave my other job i just started there, and i just don't know. Yes the computer store i will be doing networking and hardware. I will make more an hour, I will be working with people my own age not people 20+ years older than me. HELP!

question is how long will the new store last? If I were you take a second job at this store if you can.. that way you can get a feel of how things are.. the reason I am saying is this guy is getting a loan, and if he doesnt make business then you are paid from the loan.. and there is a limit to that..

The extra 4 bucks an hour is quite a lot when you think of it.. but I would tread cautiously.. By the way tape backup stuff though important is a really boring job and I side with you on that.

Since you are a student I would say go for it. You have little risk as you are probably not supporting a whole family (or are you?). Plus this would be EXCELLENT experience to put on your resume. And experience is worth more than certs.

Yes. go for it. One suggestion: try and get out of the mainframe job nicely, just in case you ever want it back. Even if you don't want it back, it's good practice to leave on a high note.

It depends, you mentioned this is a new store. Many new businesses go under every day. It's new, you don't know how it's going to do, so it's not very safe. If you want to be sure of being employed and having an income, which is quite important to you as a college student, I think you should consider remaining at your current position with the large corporation, as there a lot less likely to go under, not give you a paycheck, etc. It's safer, more reliable. You may be perfectly fine at $14/hr @ the new computer store, perhaps everything will be awesome and you'll love it and it'll last your whole college career. What if it doesn't? Then you're out of work.

Anyway, good luck on making your decision.

If possible, work both jobs. If not, stay where you are. You are in college with no responsibilities to anyone but yourself. $4 an hour is crap compared to being able to:

a)move up in larger company upon graduation
b)putting a long stint with (insert large corporate name here) on your resume

I see resumes for IT pros everyday. A lot of good, skilled people do not get jobs with larger companies because they are labeled "job-hoppers." When you finish school and begin looking for a job, your experience with a large firm will get you more attention and credibility than working at your buddies new business. You may only be doing backups and other "grunt" work, but that could change quickly. The experience you could gain working for a friend would be good, but in the long run what you are doing now will carry you farther.

Best of luck in your decision!

That's an excellent point I forgot to bring up! That's another reason to keep your current job. Large corporations look much better on your resume than a little computer shop.

Think about what would look better to a future employer:

Backup Coordinator and Mainframe Operator at XYZ Corporation

or

Sales and Service and Bobs Computer Shop

If you are concered about your "targeted" goal, stay where you are. In corporations, you have to pay your dues. Once you find a manager or supervisor that you get along well with, then the raises will start coming in.

Risk = Reward and you already work for two companies, XYZ Corp and You Inc.

Neither company is going to hold your best interests at hand it is there bottom line their worried about. Thus, one take the job you think you would be more happy with, two take the job that you think you will learn more at. Your in college, when you get out a Microsoft/SUN/etc isn't gonna care where you worked before, but what you know and what you can do for them. Switching tapes in the backroom of XYZ Corp, doesn't sound like your gonna learn a whole lot. The trials and error of a new business, setting up a new network, etc...sounds to expand your knowledge a lot more.

Not to mention say you work for 5 months at $14 an hour, the company goes belly up you can work for $6 for another 5 months and your at the same pay over the period as the $10 at XYZ Corp. ANd your not in it for the long haul anyway...it's a no brainer to me.

But do try and leave XYZ on a good note, you never know who you may need in the future!
