I currently have a 850 tbird, with asus mobo, 256 x 3 SDRAM and some other junk.

I just ordered the package from outpost that includes Boxed 1700xp CPU, SOYO Mobo, Mid tower case, and 300w PSU for $225.

Everything has been shipped except for the CPU, which is on backorder. I am thinking that I am content with my current setup, but I would double my speed.

With the new setup I would need to purchase some ddram for probably 80, and get a new heatsink probably 20.

What would you do? Keep in mind that pirces on CPUs could be getting even cheaper, and I am a bit of a tight ass. But it would be fun to mod this new case.

Thanks

If you are happy with the speed of your currrent chip, then stick with it and save the money.

Its almost like having a Porshe with a pinto engine :) Nah, if you are happy with your speed keep the current processor. I would save up the money and wait till the XP1900/2000 go down in price.

Thats what I would do! The 1700xp isn't really that huge of a jump from an 850 Athlon - I bet you would hardly notice the difference. I have an Athlon 850@1000 and an Athlon 1.4@1.53Ghz - both machines feel just as fast as each other.

The 1700 will feel much faster for certain applications, but I would recommend, unless you really really want the speed right now, to wait until prices on XPs are driven down by the Throughoubreads and (at the end of the year) the ClawHammer.
