What would you consider running to be?

Im starting to run again to get back into shape, yet i dont think i've ever really thought about what pace is considered running. I use a treadmill to get a feel for the pace i should keep up with. I am 5'10" so that gives you a clue to my stride length.
I've been going about 5mph, but it seems way way to easy, is that just jogging or what?
 
well....thats a 12 minute mile, so that's pretty slow. i think you can walk a mile in 15 minutes.

i think a good initial goal is to run around a 9 minute mile.
 
I have always considered 4.0 fast walking, 5.0 jogging, 6.0+ running. I am by no means a pro though. 🙂
 
Of course, this all depends on your height and length of your legs.

For a midget, 5mph is a sprint.
 
Really varies on the person, but *to me* it's not running unless you are somewhere around(or obviously under) the 9:00 minutes per mile mark, or in MPH that would be a little above 6.5MPH.

It's at that point that you really start to bring your limbs in and tighten up your stride.

But it's all subject and that's where I choose to draw the line.

What would be the estimated equivalent of running 6.5 miles an hour using an Elliptical Machine as far as calories burned ?
 
I used to run all the time - track, cross country, to stay in shape, etc. I really need to get back into it.

Personally, I think this:
[*]Walking is <5 MPH (not counting Olympic speed walking here).
[*]The transition from walking to jogging occurs between 5 MPH and 6.5 MPH for most people.
[*]Jogging is typically 5 MPH to 8.5 MPH.
[*]The transition from jogging to running typically occurs betten 7 MPH and 8.5 MPH for most people.
[*]Running is >8.5 MPH.

Adjust those a bit if you wish, but that is where I think most people make the transitions.
 
Cool, welll basically i'm trying a running schedule as follows to re-condition myself, but it says: "If in doubt, slow down. You should be able to hold a conversation while you run. "

Now i have gotten to week 8, but i was running 5pmh, and walking 3mph.
I love this routine to build your endurance up...
But then i slacked off and stopped running due to laziness...

This time around i want to start running faster, but i believe 6mph would be a good start.
