#1: Dell 2405FPW on a FX5200

#2: Dell 2005FPW on a 6800GT

#3: 7800GTX on a 17" Mitsubishi Diamondpoint SB70
EDIT:

Added #3

well it depends if you'll be gaming or not. if not then option 1 is the clear choice. If so, i'd go for option three, and then pick up a cheap used 19" crt for $30

#2 is the only configuration where neither one of the components is unmatched to the other. I don't think that a 7800GTX will give you much benenfit with a 17" monitor, and I think that with the FX5200 you will just be wishing you had something better everytime you turn your computer on.

dammit, i accidentally picked 3...well, i would go for #2, cause its the best config/combo you have. 7800GTX isnt really worth it as 7800GT/GTX are all bottlenecked by cpu. i'd stick with the 6800GT and the 2005fpw. maybe try for a 2405fpw and 6800GT?

just my 2 cents.

Number 2. But if you can give it a little more money 7800GT would be the perfect match IMO.

sorry, I forgot to mention my specs and so on.

A64 3200+@stock (Venice)
Gig of PC3200
Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939
FX5200
17" CRT
Antec 480W (not PCI-E ready :()

I do game a bit in my spare time, but I won't have much of that, this coming semester. I was originally thinking 2005FPW and 6800GT all the way. Then I thought of the possibilities the 2405FPW offers like component out, HDTV-capabilities (mmmm..), and the extra real estate. Ofcourse the only thing bogging me down is my need for a new vid card to drive the 24" and ofcourse the girlfriend factor :p She would go BERSERK right now if I were to drop so much cash at one time on my rig. I think the only 2 real viable options for the moment are either #1 or #2 as you folks are suggesting. THanks for the input folks.

*forgot to mention the figures i'm looking at*

I can right now get a brand new 2405FPW locally for $780. The 2005FPW right now is $400+ from dell.com and a 6800GT(AGP) will run in the $230-250 range. But PCI-E is in the back of my head, haunting me.

I could be less than honest and advise #1, knowing that you'd sooner or later plunk down the money for a better video card to run it at native resolution.
but #2 seems the way to go to upgrade both and enjoy for a long time.

#2 by a landslide.

#1 is great if you play absolutely zero games; otherwise that monitor needs #3's video card in order to run at that resolution smoothly ;) .

#3 is silly - the video card is wasted IMO on that monitor.

how ugly is gaming when it down scaled on the 2405? I don't think the 5200 can take much more then 1024x768 and thats playing CS 1.6...I run source at 640, so I can play competively. Even then it is a slide show at times.

Also do any of you 2005FPW owners have any buyers remorse?
