what would/wouldn't you jump down onto a subway track for?

how is this worthwhile of even being called a news story on engadget, I have no clue.. doesn't change the fact that it was indeed posted there.
oh noes!

seriously, they make it sound like a big deal and that he is some kind of iFreak for doing that. Sure, it was an iphone that he wanted to reclaim. but um.. it's not exactly a far leap, anybody who isn't a midget could probably get back onto the platform with relative ease. If I so no train coming, and couldn't see the lights, I'd drop down. For what? Hell I'd do it for a $20 bill, regardless if it were mine or not. Hell, probably even a $10 bill. Maybe not a $5, because I'd probably have to deal with potential security people (not sure if anyone mans subway stations, no subways in Ohio or Michigan, well, there is a short elevated train detroit, like chicago's, that has stations, but the point still stands).

basically, mention what you would or would not jump down from the platform onto the track below for. Mind you, yes there is an electric rail, so be careful, but there should be some trackless portions of cement at the far edges, more than enough room for your feet while you reach for whatever you are trying to retrieve/recover.

i am not familiar with subway tracks, so i would only do that to help another human, but not destrekor or anyone that jumped down there to get $5

Your first mistake was assuming that Engadget posts news. It does not. Engadget is a blog which posts interesting technology-related stories.

Seen from that (proper) perspective, them posting about something dumb like that makes perfect sense.

I don't think you're a horrible person, whether or not someone claims that they'd jump down to save a person has no bearing on if they'd actually do it. If the person was unable to get back on the platform and there was no train coming, I suppose I'd do it but I know I'm not as brave as that guy in New York that let the train roll over him by less than inches.

well yes I understand that, but how someone deemed it was worthy of posting it as if it were news is boggling. then again, a lot of things posted there are worthless, so, ignore my rant. ;)

good, please don't. I don't want humans saving other humans doing things that could get themselves killed. now if i was endangering someone else in the process, i'd ask you to kill me or prevent me from doing whatever it was that was risky. but if it's just me doing something stupid, don't waste your time. ;)

i always accept full responsibility for the actions I take. if i die, i die. :)

Engadget orgasms over anything iPhone related.

Anyway, I'd jump down there for a human, or a dog, or a cat, or MY bunny, but that's about it.

I don't know if I'd jump down to save some random stranger, maybe a child...I dunno. There are too many variables in the equation to know for sure...Money? Probably anything more than $5...IF it was safe to do so...otherwise...bye-bye Mr. President...(like I haven't thrown away more in bullshit purchases over the years!)

I might jump down late at night to retrieve an iPhone but not during the day when the train comes every few minutes. Just don't hit that third rail cuz it'll get ya.

Sucks for the emergency workers scraping you off the tracks and everyone else that would get delayed. If you're gonna die on a whim, don't inconvenience other people. You'd be #1 on Youtube though, there's your 15 minutes of fame.

yea, obviously my dive off the platform isn't without peering down the tunnels first. ;) it's still a risk, sure.
i'd jump down to save anybody not doing what I have outlined as what I would do. If they fell, and I felt it was safe to jump and help, I would. However, if I see the lights of the train coming, pretty sure I don't plan on helping. Especially if it was an older adult. Why I say that? Well, they have contributed enough to society. Children are the future. Hopefully a good future, but that's up to them. :p
If it was a child, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a very hard time deciding against the idea of jumping down to help, even if I could get the lights. If the train was already approaching and near the platform, well, that's about the only time I could guarantee I would not help. There's no use in basically committing suicide.
And worse comes to worse, if I see a train barreling toward me, instead of trying to climb out I'd press myself as flat as possible against the far wall and hope for the best, or a very instant death. I'll take either, preferably the one that comes bundled with life.

oh please, inconvenience is nothing, and with subways, pretty sure it wouldn't take long. gives everyone a story though. ;)

and remember: i'm a college student, so money is very convincing. Once I go active and actually have real money coming in.. well, I probably wouldn't jump for less than $100. $100 is still convincing and can nearly provide 2 full tanks of gas, or close to 2 games. :)

I jumped down to get a woman's shoe that had gotten lodged in the door of the subway as it pulled away, and then fallen onto the tracks. I was young then. Probably would not do that again, unless she was way hotter.

I jumped down once to get a phone that I dropped. It was like 2am and there was like 1 subway worker there who said that he called someone for help but after half an hour no one came. So a policeman came by (he just happened to be walking around) and he said that he'd help me up if I went down. I made sure to only step on the wood board and once I got the phone he helped me back up.

funny I had totally forgotten about that. Wonder if I'd do the same for my iphone now.

I'd jump down for a dog

But then, dogs aren't allowed in NYC subways

If it's a person down there, I hope I have a camera ??? profit!!! :D

you would see the train coming. duh. besides, most subways have a big alcove under the platform. It would be scary, but you'd be relatively safe there while the train passed.

Third rail being potential instadeath with trains coming every couple of minutes being potential instasplat ....
Hmmm ....

I wouldn't jump on the rails for a stupid phone, that's for sure!
I would only consider it to save somebody else's life, or for enough money to make the risk worth the reward. I would need to watch the specific track and know the train schedule to know the exact risk so I could then evaluate the reward.

If I calculate the chance of death or serious to something like 0.001%, then maybe I'd do it for $10,000
If the chance of death were to be around 1% then I would probaly not consider it unless the monetary reward was near $1,000,000
for 10% chance of doom, $10,000,000 reward would be needed.
