I live on a ground floor apartment. If I were to take an air horn to the ceiling and sound it a few times, what would it sound like in the apartment above me?

Its hard enough to sleep with the face shield on after getting LASIK, I don't need this idiot above me thumping his sub woofers.

It would sound like there's an even bigger asshole living below him.

Air horns are much higher frequency (shorter wavelength) than Bass. Most of it will reflect back into your face unfortunately. Some of it will breach the floor, but not to the extent you would want. In order to obtain better results, the air horn has to be fired into one of your neighbor's windows (where the boundary is much thinner, allowing more of the higher frequencies to pass through).

I have found the best solution is to knock on their door and politely tell them to turn their subwoofers off after a certain hour. If they fail to comply, call your landlord if your lease asks for this, and if not, call the local police department.

A "solution".
A more direct link.

It doesn't cure the fact that you have an inconsiderate person living above you, but it will at least allow you to sleep. Just add earplugs and you're set to go. I've been using it for about a week and a half now. It's the best sleep I've had during the weekdays in a long time. People talking, jumping, yelling, or just generally making noise in adjacent rooms isn't a concern anymore.

Caveat: if you want it to work during a power outage, you'll need to either get it a UPS, or else wire it to run off a bank of C or D-cell batteries.

Take a blade off a ceiling fan and beef up the mounting and run it as fast as it will go. An unbalanced rotor can make a LOT of noise.
